Believe it or not, Hunter Pence, a .260 hitter, is a .260 hitter against righties and a .260 hitter against lefties.

His OPS is actually 50 points higher against righties this year.

Could be worse than the House situation. There was a guy named Brian Mazone in the Phillies organization in 2006 who had it worse.

He was then 30 years old and was supposed to make his Major League debut because the Phils needed a sixth starter because of a doubleheader.

Anyway, he got his family and friends a bunch of tickets, the game was rained out and he still hasn't started in the Majors.

Unofficial Scorer:
Roy Oswalt's four August starts have come against Johan Santana, Josh Fogg, Tim Lincecum and Randy Johnson.

Pretty tough group, and if you didn't know any better, you'd think he was starting over today. And if you didn't know any better, you'd really think he'd started over when he takes the mound Wednesday against Fogg, in all likelihood.

But today, it's Santana, whose excellence denied Oswalt a win for the only time in his last five starts. But he couldn't deny the Astros a win, as they came back against the New York bullpen for a thrilling extra-innings victory.

Unofficial Scorer:
Santana, who gets no support from his offense or bullpen, has just an 11-7 record despite a 2.75 ERA. He throws a low-90s fastball with a slider and a change, the latter two of which are very deceptive.

A couple of Astros righties, though, hit him well. Ty Wigginton is 5-for-11 (.455) with two doubles, while Miguel Tejada is 10-for-30 with a pair of homers.

Both will bat this inning with Mark Loretta in between as Santana gets it started with a strike to Wigginton.

Unofficial Scorer:
Roy Oswalt comes in off the game of his life against the Diamondbacks in which he pitched eight innings of one-hit ball. He also rides a five-game winning streak into his final appearance at Shea Stadium until the NLCS.

The Astros once again, with the off-day, decided to use Oswalt on four days' rest, moving him up a spot in the rotation. Apparently the fact that he was worn out after 105 pitches and couldn't finish the shutout last time was not enough to deter them from keeping him on normal rest.

But the task will be much more difficult today than the Arizona game, thanks to two players who have extremely good numbers against the Astros righty. Carlos Delgado is 5-for-11 with a 1.472 OPS in 16 appearances, while Carlos Beltran is 8-for-17 with a 1.265 OPS in 20.

And I forgot to mention with the Loretta knock in the first:

For the 7,441st time in their 7,441-game history, the Mets will not throw a no-hitter.

How bad are Johan Santana's run and bullpen support? He's just 4-3 with three no-decisions in the 10 starts in which he's allowed zero or one earned run.

On the Diamondbacks, a worse offensive club than the Mets, Brandon Webb is 10-0 in the 12 starts in which he's allowed one earned run or fewer.

What does former Mets GM and current ESPN analyst Steve Phillips have in common with Oakland GM Billy Beane, seven-time Cy Young winner Roger Clemens and former Pirates manager Lloyd McClendon?

Meanwhile, with his next pitch, Santana ties his season-high at 118 pitches. And that day was only because he was going for a complete game.

Johan Santana's 121st pitch induced a bad swing by Miguel Tejada at his ankles and resulted in the 21st and final out for Santana.

The Astros will get two innings to solve the Mets bullpen, which they torched for roughly an 8 ERA in the series here in Houston while the Astros pen kept the Mets off the scoreboard completely.

After Roy Oswalt takes the seventh, we'll see if the Mets bullpen was spotted too much of a head start.

Unofficial Scorer:
As Darin Erstad lays out for a pretty out No. 1, he prevented a fifth hit from the Mets.

That means that there's still a good chance that the Astros will allow four hits or fewer in two straight games and lose both of them.

(Dating back to Wednesday in Milwaukee before the off-day.)

Cheap indeed it would be, but it would be the first since July 6 of last year, when Wandy Rodriguez threw one.

Oswalt finished the game, if the Astros don't score three runs here in the ninth, retiring the last 20 hitters he faced.

Erstad, Ausmus, pinch-hitter, or perhaps Erstad, pinch-hitter, pinch-hitter coming up against Luis Ayala.

Roy Oswalt retired 20 straight batters and frankly looked great after the second inning, but he got off to a shaky start. The pitch to Brian Schneider was in the zone, but it's often one that you get away with to a No. 8 hitter.
