Adam Jude:
Hey everyone ... I'm excited for a busy week. Heading down to Vegas on Wednesday to cover both the Beavers and Ducks.

Where are you staying?

The Oregonian:
And, what's your game? Blackjack?
Monday March 11, 2013 11:01 The Oregonian

Adam Jude:
MGM Grand. All the teams are staying there, too.

Nice. I'm a fan of The Paris, myself.

The Oregonian:
Anyone? Ducks questions?
Monday March 11, 2013 11:02 The Oregonian
11:02
Adam Jude:
Yes, blackjack mostly. I'll be trying to pick up craps a little better lately. So we'll see how that goes.

Seems like Oregon and their late game struggles almost always Altman's inability to get quality looks...he's a great motivator, but doesn't the staff need X and O help?

Great question, by the way. ...

Adam Jude:
Tough question. Not sure I entirely agree. There have been some moments late where Altman maybe could've drawn up better plays. But, to be frank, Oregon doesn't have one go-to guy in the clutch. Singler has a tough time creating his own shot, and Dotson is still young. ...

Any idea how the Pac-12 tournament will shake out?

The shots were the at the end of the Cal game (in Berkeley) and at home vs. Colorado.

Man, I have no clue how it will shake out. California was the hot team in the Pac-12 until getting whipped by Stanford at home. And then the Cougars sweep UCLA and USC ... and, seriously, WHAT IS GOING ON IN THIS LEAGUE?

Do you expect a better atmosphere in Las Vegas than the staples center in LA?
Monday March 11, 2013 11:06 Blake
11:06
Adam Jude:
They work a lot on free throws. Altman was preaching them A TON before the Colorado game. And he was right. That was the difference, in a lot of ways.

Adam Jude:
Yes, I can sense a buzz about the event in Vegas. Before, going to L.A. felt like a chore for most teams. Hard to get excited about playing in a huge arena (Staples) when you know no one will be there.

Was at the game on Saturday - noted that the ducks seemed low on effort or energy in the first half and dug a hole for themselves. Did you think the same thing?
Monday March 11, 2013 11:07 Guest
11:08
Adam Jude:
The first-half struggles have been a troubling trend, haven't they? I don't know what the answer is, and Altman, when asked, has seemed at a loss, too. But the Ducks did seem able to turn it on in the second half ... until this last road trip, anyway.

The Ducks, at this point, are out of scholarships for next year (although 1 could be organically created for super recruit Aaron Gordon). They seam *very* small next year...thoughts?

Adam Jude:
They'll have to count on Waverly Austin a lot, for sure. But I think he still has good upside, in a Tony Woods way. Ben Carter, at 6-7, is penciled in as the starting PF.

Obiviously there are some. Internal problems going on with the basketball team do you have any insight
Monday March 11, 2013 11:09 Guest
11:11
Adam Jude:
Well, it's not obvious to me. So, no, I don't have insight. To me, they're just a team struggling to figure it out right now. Shots are falling, energy is low. And they're trying to bring back one of their top players (Artis) from injury. That's not always easy.

Do you feel the team got over confident with their standing in the PAC12 which resulted in let down over this past week?
Monday March 11, 2013 11:11 Guest
11:12
The Oregonian:
(Guest, I'm not contradicting or trying to be contrary, but I'm intrigued: What signals internal problems? What are you seeing or sensing?)
Monday March 11, 2013 11:12 The Oregonian
11:13
Adam Jude:
The same thing happened in late January when they shot up to No. 10 in the AP poll. In a word: pressure. The Ducks have never been in this position before and it's understandable, though no less frustrating for them and for fans, that they dind't handle it well. I don't sense that that were overconfident necessarily.

Who is your dark horse in the tournament? What lower seeded team makes the most noise?
Monday March 11, 2013 11:13 Craig

Stanford or Colorado, probably. I might've said USC until that ugly loss in Pullman and the ugly fallout from the reported fight/incident in Spokane.

Haven't gotten in football mode yet, but I haven't heard much buzz about any potential newcomers. There will almost certainly be a surprise or two with some young guys stepping up and trying to prove themselves. Maybe a BJ Kelley or a Pharaoh Brown type.

Baseball is a funny sport - lots of ups and downs that can't be explained. What are the biggest challenges they will face this season?
Monday March 11, 2013 11:19 Craig
11:20
Adam Jude:
Yeah, that's why there are so many games in a baseball season. Fluky things can happen in a short series, but over the course of a 60-game (or 162-game) season, things tend to even out how they should. The best teams usually rise to the top over the long haul. ...

More questions?
Monday March 11, 2013 11:20 The Oregonian
11:20
Adam Jude:
For Oregon, pitching and defense have been solid. Those have been staples of the Horton era. The offense needs to keep grinding out a run or two here and there. It's a pretty exhausting way to play, but the Ducks do it well -- and they take pride in that.
Monday March 11, 2013 11:20 Adam Jude

More hoops talk: I think the Ducks got a big, big break with their quarterfinal game against either UW or WSU. Ducks match up well with both. Not easy to beat a team three times in a season, but Ducks should be confident against either one.

Do they lose to Cal again in the next round though?
Monday March 11, 2013 11:22 Craig
11:23
Adam Jude:
I think the Ducks would love, love, love another shot at Cal. Remember, Artis didn't play in either of those losses ... and the Bears won by 4 points and 1 point. It's going to be a dogfight for sure, if it happens.
Monday March 11, 2013 11:23 Adam Jude
11:23
Adam Jude:
That said, Cal would *probably* be my pick right now to win the Pac-12 tourney title.
