[Comment From SaraSara: ]
Obama’s Health Care Plan: The Mandate Muddle by Paul Krugman Imagine this: It’s the summer of 2009, and President Barack Obama is about to unveil his plan for universal health care. But his health policy experts have done the math, and they’ve concluded that the plan really needs to include a requirement that everyone have health insurance - a so-called mandate. Without a mandate, they find, the plan will fall far short of universal coverage. Worse yet, without a mandate health insurance will be much more expensive than it should be for those who do choose to buy it. But Mr. Obama knows that if he tries to include a mandate in the plan, he’ll face a barrage of misleading attacks from conservatives who oppose universal health care in any form. And he’ll have trouble responding - because he made the very same misleading attacks on Hillary Clinton and John Edwards during the race for the Democratic nomination.
Tuesday February 26, 2008 8:52 Sara
8:54
Paul Krugman? He's of course, a backer of Hillary Clinton, and has been attacking Obama relentlessly.
Tuesday February 26, 2008 8:54
8:54
[Comment From SaraSara: ]
By the way, the limitations of the Massachusetts plan to cover all the state’s uninsured - which is actually doing much better than most reports suggest - come not from the difficulty of enforcing mandates, but from the fact that the state hasn’t yet allocated enough money for subsidies.
Tuesday February 26, 2008 8:54 Sara
8:54
[Comment From AaronAaron: ]
What a compelling, one-sided editorial from someone not well educated on the facts
Tuesday February 26, 2008 8:54 Aaron
8:54
[Comment From SaraSara: ]
I’d add, however, a further concern: the debate over mandates has reinforced the uncomfortable sense among some health reformers that Mr. Obama just isn’t that serious about achieving universal care - that he introduced a plan because he had to, but that every time there’s a hard choice to be made he comes down on the side of doing less.

Here's Edwards campaign communications director Chris Kofinis responding to Hillary Clinton's comments yesterday that "it's easy to talk":

"Instead of attacking Democrats, like John Edwards, who have fought against special interests for decades, Senator Clinton may want to first explain to voters why she has taken more money from the defense industry than even the Republican presidential candidates, and has taken more money than any other Democrat from special interests—the health care industry, the pharmaceutical industry, and the oil and gas industry—that are helping to destroy the middle class.”

NYT Feb 3rd: "Since 2003, executives and employees of Exelon, which is based in Illinois, have contributed at least $227,000 to Mr. Obama’s campaigns for the United States Senate and for president. Two top Exelon officials, Frank M. Clark, executive vice president, and John W. Rogers Jr., a director, are among his largest fund-raisers. Another Obama donor, John W. Rowe, chairman of Exelon, is also chairman of the Nuclear Energy Institute, the nuclear power industry’s lobbying group, based in Washington. Exelon’s support for Mr. Obama far exceeds its support for any other presidential candidate. In addition, Mr. Obama’s chief political strategist, David Axelrod, has worked as a consultant to Exelon. A spokeswoman for Exelon said Mr. Axelrod’s company had helped an Exelon subsidiary, Commonwealth Edison, with communications strategy periodically since 2002, but had no involvement in the leak controversy or other nuclear issues."

Clinton had collected $413,000 from lobbyists and $533,000 from PACs -- leading all 2008 presidential contenders in both categories. Clinton has also raised about $3 million from PACs and $400,000 from lobbyists for her Senate campaigns, according to the group.

Missing the POINT! As Obamaheads always do. We were talking about the Dali Obama saying his hands were clean and that his campaign hasn't benefitted from 527s when he has repeatedly. I don't know if she's denied receiving lobbyist money or PAC money and don't care. We're talking about his speciality--HYPROCRISY.

I think it goes deeper than the candidates themselves, it is about what kind of team each will bring to the office. I have a concern on both fronts. Clinton's team seems reactive and behind on a lot of issues. The example of ENDA and gender played out right here on Bilerico is one example. On the other hand Obama seems too much like Carter to me, he will staff the White House with a bunch of beltway outsiders who will have trouble accomplishing things.

So far I have not seen anyone here express the working of politics and the deals that are made. Fish for sale! Or the backroom pandering that is worked that has nothing to do with the public, or things that need to be resolved. I have seen deals to build bridges that ended up buried for years, only to be dug up and hauled away to make rihgt of way for a half billion dollar deal. The deal was a pay off for support and to make sure certain individuals wereplaced in the corret positions. Media is applied in ways to cover, and at times what appears as meda exposure is in fact distraction from the facts.
