Stanley Cup finals, Game 1: Red Wings vs. Penguins(05/24/2008)
7:43
Michael Zuidema:
Greetings from Joe Louis Arena. After some initial battles with the building's Internet, I'm here for tonight's live blog. Both teams are warming up on the ice, and I'm about eight seats away from ESPN's Barry Melrose -- that means it must be time for some hockey.

Michael Zuidema:

Some teenager just came up to Melrose and asked him for his prediction in the series. The kid was wearing a Red Wings jersey and came away looking happy, so I'll assume that Melrose is going with Detroit over Pittsburgh.

There are loads of Penguins jerseys -- Crosby, Lemieux, Fleury -- all over the building. And they are making some noise.

That's true; I was fortunate enough to be at that game too. Although I was impressed with the number of Seahawks gear that wandered through Motown that whole week.

DID you hear about that bet or supossed bet that the mayor of detroit had with the mayor from pittsburg??What are your thoughts about that??
Saturday May 24, 2008 7:53 detfan84
7:54
Michael Zuidema:

If you mean the Pittsburgh mayor's request that it be awarded the "Hockeytown" moniker, then I think that's ridiculous. It's not like Pittsburgh was going to hand over the "Steel City" nickname or the Pirates or something. Kwame Kilpatrick has enough problems with out making that wager.

How is the crowd looking? Is the Joe filling up pretty well?

Michael Zuidema:

JLA looks pretty full right now. People are still trickling into their seats, but there's no doubt it will be a sellout. It's a loud crowd, with plenty of dueling  "Let's Go Wings" and "Let's Go Pens" chants.

soooo who is really to blame with the scheduling conflict here?
Saturday May 24, 2008 8:03 Roberto
8:04
Michael Zuidema:
I blame TV. But the NBA and NHL have to shoulder their burden of the blame, too. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman held a news conference before the game, and said it has to do with networks setting their schedules in stone almost a year in advance, but I have a hard time believing there's no room for flexibility.

About 60 years ago, someone through the eight-armed slime ball on the ice to signify the number of wins that was then needed to win the Stanley Cup. The rest is gooey history.
