What do the other candidates make of the disgraceful negative campaigning of the Labour candidate? I speak particularly of the website and the campaigners constantly drawing attention to Mr Timpson's social class.

Elizabeth Shenton:

I have stayed away from using dirty tactics and negative campaigning in this by-election. Out on the doorsteps, people are telling me that they are grateful of the way that I have focused on the positives aspects of Liberal Democrat policies that can help to address the issues that they are worried about and not the negative dirty tactics deployed by others. They see it as a breath of fresh air after seeing what is being produced by the other candidates.

Hi Rob, I am completely against moving the station and have told Railtrack so. I have got a categorical assurance from them that any proposal will go out to consultation so the people of Crewe and Nantwich can make their voices heard.

Tamsin Dunwoody:
Hi Russ, I have 34 years close links with Crewe and Nantwich. I moved to Wales when my son was critically ill on Doctors orders. I would be very happy to move back here if you elect me.

Martin Stanford:

Elizabeth?

Monday May 19, 2008 9:02 Martin Stanford
9:02
Elizabeth Shenton:
It’s very important because in a by-election - we are choosing a local MP to serve Crewe and Nantwich - not the government of the country.     I have always lived and worked in this area - so I understand people's concerns and I will be able to fight for them in Parliament.

[Comment From Edward TimpsonEdward Timpson: ]
We support any help to compensate those hit by the Government's tax increases on the low paid. But Labour haven't addressed the root cause of the problem. The have done this to save their own skins

Elizabeth Shenton:

It was nothing more than a by-election con. When Frank Field moved his amendment against the 10p tax change, the Liberal Democrats voted with him and the Conservatives did not.   The Conservatives failed to stand up against this tax change at the time which is why there is no point in electing another Conservative.

The current tax system is making Britain more unequal everyday. Our system will be fairer without raising tax overall. The Liberal Democrats will tax income less and pollution more. We would therefore cut the basic rate of income tax by 4p, abolish unfair Council Tax and replace it with a tax based on the ability to pay. We would increase environmental taxes such as Air Passenger Duty, limit tax relief on pension contributions to the basic rate,
and reform residential stamp duty. Inheritance tax would be reformed and gains made by non-residents on property situated in the UK brought within Capital Gains Tax.

Elizabeth Shenton:
Tomorrow I will be visiting a housing association in Nantwich which specialises in providing  accommodation for first time buyers through shared ownership schemes.   I want to encourage more finance schemes like this.
Monday May 19, 2008 9:12 Elizabeth Shenton
9:13
Edward Timpson:
Mark - We have offered a number of things to help first time buyers, including reducing stamp duty for first time buyers and shared equity schemes.   The problem with Labour's top down approach is local people have a disincentive for new housing because they are built without the necessary infrastructure, roads, hospitals and services.
Monday May 19, 2008 9:13 Edward Timpson
9:13
Tamsin Dunwoody:

Is it true Tamsin that you are living in a hotel in the constituency? You haven't even rented a local property?
Monday May 19, 2008 9:16 Guido, sipping V&T
9:16
Elizabeth Shenton:

Across the constituency there are still people who are suffering because of the abolition of the 10p tax rate.   Our figures show it to be something like 9,000 people.   Full compensation is essential.

Monday May 19, 2008 9:16 Elizabeth Shenton
9:16
Edward Timpson:
Rob - I live near Kelsall just outside the constituency.   As I said I have lived in Cheshire all my life and have worked in the Crewe area for the last 10 years
Monday May 19, 2008 9:16 Edward Timpson
9:17
Tamsin Dunwoody:
Hi Alison, the key to buying a home for yourself without Shared Equity is to bring in more contracts to employers and higher wages to employees. The market has been overinflated over the last few years and needs to stabilise to allow everyone a chance to get on the property ladder.

Tamsin - if your surname was not Dunwoody would you be Labour's candidate? Your answer of 9.14 is typical 'New Labour' without class.
Monday May 19, 2008 9:18 Tim
9:18
Elizabeth Shenton:
James - You're right about the cost of ID cards, which is why the Liberal Democrats would scrap the proposed scheme and spend the money on providing an additional 10,000 bobbies on the beat.

Khalid - policies with substance are the way to combat apathy.
Monday May 19, 2008 9:20 Elizabeth Shenton
9:21
Edward Timpson:
I have spoken to people across the whole of Crewe and Nantwich over many months and not once has it been raised as an issue.   Local people are not interested in cheap attacks on class.   What they want to know is how we are going to reduce crime, imporve local services and bring down the cost of living.

9:25
Tamsin Dunwoody:
Hi John. easier planning laws to allow householders to install renewable energy, get away from oil/gas dependancy, help those in fuel poverty (£1.2bn invested so far) keep working with business to reduce consumption, stop manufacturers making stuff that stays on standby all the time.
Monday May 19, 2008 9:25 Tamsin Dunwoody
9:25
Edward Timpson:
John - What we need is sustainable energy policy which is not over reliant on one form.   it has to be a combnation of wind, oil coal, nuclear, solar.   Additionally we need to be conscious about reducing our carbon footprint and to move sensibly towards Kyoto targets
Monday May 19, 2008 9:25 Edward Timpson
9:25
Elizabeth Shenton:
John - securing future energy supplies is a hugely important issue facing this country.   With the abundance of offshore expertise in the North Sea oil industry, combined with its endless supply of wind - I don't see why we can't combine these two factors to make the world's largest offshore windfarm.

Elizabeth Shenton:
Hello Rich. I have always advocated that I will be a strong independent voice for the people of Crewe and Nantwich, fighting for the issues that effect them. But that doesn’t mean I have to be a rebel – there is a world of difference between a rebel and a strong independent voice.

Oops double question there... only one answer required from each person!
Monday May 19, 2008 9:29 Martin Stanford
9:29
Edward Timpson:
I will vote against 42 days.   The Government has not made the case for this.   We have proposed the introduction of intercept evidence into trials and detention post charge.
Monday May 19, 2008 9:29 Edward Timpson
9:29
Elizabeth Shenton:
In answer to how I'd vote on 42 days detention, I'd vote strongly against it.   The Liberal Democrats have always been consistent on this.   Not a single terrorist prosecution in this country has required someone being questioned for longer than the current 28 days - it's that simple.

Monday May 19, 2008 9:30 russ

Tamsin Dunwoody:
The balance between human rights and national security is an important one. the current proposal is only intended to be used in the case of multiple terrorist incidents and cannot be invoked without parliament and the judiciarys approval. It is also not renewable. However, my concern would always be for the people of Crewe and Nantwichs safety.
Monday May 19, 2008 9:30 Tamsin Dunwoody
9:31
Tamsin Dunwoody:
Hi Stephen, he ran on the 10p issue being the only issue in the campaign. Actually it is all about the local people and local issues. Cameron refused to say he would reverse the 10p change.

Russ - I support research that could relieve the suffering of so many people with diseases like MS, Parkinsons and even cancer.   This could make a big difference in so many peoples' lives - but it does need to be strongly regulated.

Monday May 19, 2008 9:33 Graham
9:34
Tamsin Dunwoody:

I would support it with the five safeguards built into it and that it is not renewable. Parliament has the ability to vote against any rare usage of this and it prevents the country having to be put into a State of Emergency which the Civil Contingencies Act would currently do.

Monday May 19, 2008 9:34 Tamsin Dunwoody
9:34
Martin Stanford:

We are moderating the debate here at Sky Centre... in an attempt to deal with a range of issues....

But most people seem to want to ask Tamsin about her campaign or the state of the Labour Party nationally... so some other questions...

Tamsin, On the Politics Show yesterday Harriet Harman was clearly uncomfortable with the negative tone of the Labour campaign in Crewe & Nantwich. Do you support the "toff" attack angle or has it been thrust upon you by Labour high command?

Elizabeth Shenton:

Graham - I used to work in banking and when two banks merged, I led the negotiations for my union and did the work to prove that it was not necessary to close as many branches as they proposed.   This saved jobs and maintained services for customers.

Many people in Crewe remember the loss of job in the railway works under the Conservatives.   They are worried about the possible loss of jobs in Royal Mail, Bentley and Bombardier.   People want an MP who will fight to keep jobs in our area.I used to work in banking and when two banks merged.

Monday May 19, 2008 9:35 Elizabeth Shenton
9:36
Edward Timpson:
Graham - As a family lawyer I have represented hundreds of people in your position who have fuond themselves in financial difficulties.   I have and want to work closely with the Crewe and Nantwich Citzens Advice Bureau to make sure they receive the help they need
Monday May 19, 2008 9:36 Edward Timpson
9:36
Tamsin Dunwoody:
Hi Graham, I have worked closely with fire fighters, tax office staff and hospital staff facing uncertainty in their future. I worked within the business sector creating new jobs and training people to upskill them to retain their jobs. I will ALWAYS stand up for working people and fight against any attempt to make people redundant or reduce pay and terms and conditions.

Electing a Liberal Democrat MP for Crewe and Nantwich will send a strong message to Gordon Brown that enough is enough.

Hi Nick, this is a by-election campaign and I do believe it is vital that voters know what they are getting. I am a single parent of five kids fighting to get a job. I have no family fortune to fall back on. The Tories have criticised Labour candidates in other by-elections. Its your choice. You know what you are getting with me.
