Hello, everyone and welcome to the early-bird edition of The Oregonian's Ducks live chat with Adam Jude.

Adam, what's up in Eugene?

It's chilly.

What exactly is Artis' injury and how many minutes do you see him getting against O-State.
Wednesday February 27, 2013 10:29 UT Dux
10:30
Adam Jude:
We've never gotten a straight answer on Artis' injury. Some have speculated that it's a stress fracture, which seems the best guess. I'd expect him to play 5-10 minutes on Thursday.

Switching to baseball....a lot has been made of Horton's salary this past year in which my understanding is baseball runs in the red....what do you make of that? Is Horton worth it?
Wednesday February 27, 2013 10:31 UT Dux
10:31
Adam Jude:
As Altman has said repeatedly, he's going to bring Artis back slowly and Loyd will remain the starter.
Wednesday February 27, 2013 10:31 Adam Jude
10:32
Adam Jude:
Good question on Horton, and a tough one. Worth it? If the Ducks win consistently and host regionals and super regionals regularly, then, yes, he's worth it. ...
Wednesday February 27, 2013 10:32 Adam Jude
10:32
Adam Jude:
But the nature of college athletics these days, and Oregon in particular, is often about balancing the budget. So from Oregon's perspective, it might initially be tough to swallow those salary figures because the program does lose money.

5-10 minutes? Could you see that changing is the game is close, esp. since it's Singler's last game at home, and against the Beavs.

Adam Jude:
Altman said no on that. They'll have a set number for Artis and that's apparently it. Frankly, I'm not sure how much he could help in a tight game late anyway. You have to figure he'll be rusty, right?

The Oregonian:
Why is Altman so circumspect? Is he Kelly-like with regards to talking about injuries?
Wednesday February 27, 2013 10:34 The Oregonian
10:34
Adam Jude:
I'm expecting a close game, which has been both team's M.O. this season. Beavs, despite their record, have been solid on the road this season.
Wednesday February 27, 2013 10:34 Adam Jude
10:35
Adam Jude:
I wouldn't say he's Kelly-like, no. My sense is Altman just doesn't want to make a big deal about it.

Did you ever find out where Barron landed? It's been a few years since a Duck has been drafted in the NBA...which current players do you see playing at the next level? What about Kazemi?
Wednesday February 27, 2013 10:36 UT Dux
10:36
Adam Jude:
Also, if you recall, the Beavs came to Eugene and knocked off the Ducks here last year. Altman reminded his players of that this week and said he felt like the Ducks gave that game away.
Wednesday February 27, 2013 10:36 Adam Jude
10:37
Adam Jude:
Still nothing on Barron. ... Kazemi probably has the best chance, though it's not a great chance. He's just so solid all around the floor. If he would just shoot the damn ball once in awhile, he'd have an even better chance.

The Oregonian:
Looking ahead to next season, where are the big holes to fill in the Ducks' men's basketball lineup?
Wednesday February 27, 2013 10:38 The Oregonian
10:38
Adam Jude:
Everyone always wonders about Kazemi's offense. I've seen him in practice and he does have a 10-12 foot jumper. For some reason, he just doesn't want to shoot it in games. Too unselfish, really.

How many Pac 12 teams go to the tournament? Oregon a 7th seed or 10th?
Wednesday February 27, 2013 10:39 McDuck
10:39
Adam Jude:
A lot of holes with Singler, Kazemi, Emory and Woods leaving. That's like -- I'm guessing here -- 65 percent of their scoring and almost all of their rebounds.
Wednesday February 27, 2013 10:39 Adam Jude
10:40
Adam Jude:
I'll say five end up in the field: Oregon, Arizona, UCLA, Cal, ASU.

Oregon could be anywhere from a 3 to a 10 seed right now, I'd say.

I agree, Kazemi is seriously awesome. I hope we have some good freshman coming in or we could be struggling. Still, Loyd will have some good experience, and Artis back. UT Dux I agree. We could be anywhere. We really need to win out, control our own destiny.

Who are other contenders for Pac-12 baseball besides OSU? Can you provide outlook on the Pac-12? I'm sure it might be the usual suspects...Arizona, ASU?
Wednesday February 27, 2013 10:41 UT Dux
10:42
Adam Jude:
You know, if the Ducks lose out -- meaning losses to bottom-dwellers OSU and Utah, plus Colorado -- and then lose their first game at the Pac-12 tourney, then, yeah, their NCAA spot is probably in jeopardy.
Wednesday February 27, 2013 10:42 Adam Jude

Oregon State looks like the team to beat right now. Stanford might have the best pitcher in the country, so they'll be in it. Plus UCLA, ASU and Arizona, the defending national champ.

I don't see us losing to Utah... we really have to beat CO and the Beavs. OSU is going to come out on fire. They are desperate to win one, especially against the Ducks at home. They can't underestimate them..

Utah's been tough at home. I'd be surprised if the Ducks lost there but, again, you never know. I'm most curious to see how Oregon handles the trip to Colorado. Never an easy place to play.

Realistically, the Ducks should of course beat Oregon State and Utah. I have my doubts about them winning at Colorado. So let's guess they finish 13-5 in conference (for the second year in a row) and get the No. 2 seed for the Pac-12 tourney. ...
Wednesday February 27, 2013 10:46 Adam Jude
10:48
Adam Jude:
With a first-round bye in P12 tourney, Ducks ought to be favored to win their first game in Vegas. That would leave them 25-7 overall with a solid, but not great, overall resume. They're definitely in the NCAA at that point, with perhaps a 6 seed. Sound OK? I'm sure most Oregon fans would've taken that in November.
