I will be providing updates on all of the deals and rumors that surface this afternoon. If you have a comment or question, feel free to ask away.

12:20
According to Ken Rosenthal, Ken Griffey Jr. has agreed to be traded to the Chicago White Sox. This move will give him the chance to compete for a ring, but is also good on the Reds' side. Moving his contract off the books is a great thing for the franchise. Is Adam Dunn next? We will find out in the next few hours.

Will Manny get shipped?
Thursday July 31, 2008 12:23 Spencer
12:37
According to the Boston Globe and several other sources, the deal is being held up on the Pirates' end. They are hung up on prospects. Pittsburgh, who would be sending Jason Bay and John Grabow to Boston, will receive Jeremy Hermida and prospects, though the Marlins are not willing to give up Ryan Tucker.
Thursday July 31, 2008 12:37
12:42
Manny has officially agreed to be traded, though. His options for 2009 and 2010 will be dropped. Still, the Pirates, who have also been chatting with the Tampa Bay Rays about Bay, could drop out if they do not receive an appealing enough package.
Thursday July 31, 2008 12:42
12:47
The Rays' plan B is reportedly Adam Dunn, who is leading the majors with 32 home runs. He is a polarizing player, and gets a bad rap for his high strikeout totals and low batting average. But he can mash and has excellent on-base skills. It was surprising that Griffey was the first Red to go, considering the scant interest for the Future Hall of Famer up until today. The Reds, according to Jon Heyman, are seeking Jeremy Hellickson and Jeff Niemann. Hellickson, who pitched well the other night for Double-A Montgomery, is off limits. He tore up the Florida State League earlier this spring, and has excellent command. Do not expect him to get shipped, though Niemann is a different story. The former Rice All-American has seen his star dimmed because of all the injuries.

ESPN is reporting via Jason Stark that the Rays are now unlikely to make ANY deals. WTF? http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?name=mlb_trade_deadline
Thursday July 31, 2008 12:48 matdog420
12:50
Well, the Reds' asking price seems a bit high if they want Hellickson. As Stark says, Dunn would add another left-handed bat to a lineup stacked with lefties--Pena, Crawford, Iwamura, ect... Still, Dunn would certainly provide an upgrade. Andrew Friedman seems content to stand pat, possibly moving up minor league outfielder Justin Ruggiano.

They do need a bat, but they are not willing to part ways with any elite prospects.

Thursday July 31, 2008 12:51

The Bay talks could start up again, though, because Stark also has a source who says the Manny deal is as good as dead.

Rays fans will have a lot to cheer about in the future, though. Think about this 2010 rotation, assuming that they are not traded or injured. Scott Kazmir, David Price, James Shields, Matt Garza and Wade Davis

True. But, unlike in year's past, the Rays' management group gets it.

Thursday July 31, 2008 12:55
12:56
And they still have a legitimate chance to win this year, regardless. Their pitching and defense are excellent, and their biggest upgrades may be by default. Pena, Crawford, Bartlett and Upton can all pick it up.

It seems the Rays are always looking towards the future, which is a great thing. But this situation has never presented itself and shouldn't be thought of in the same light.. They have a chance to win now. You can't count on them being in this situation next year. Anything can happen from now until then. Now should be the time.

That is true. They have a great chance to win now, and to sustain it for years. Who do you think they should get that would make such a huge difference? The market is not exactly great, outside of the Bay situation.

According to Stark, the Blue Jays have entered the Bay discussions. The question is why? They are 6.5 games back in the Wild Card, and have a terrible offense. They are not contenders, and the Pirates are asking for a lot.
Thursday July 31, 2008 1:05
1:06
RedSox fan, I think that Boston will take a hit in their offense. But Bay actually has a higher OPS than Manny, and Grabow, if they get him, is a solid left-handed reliever.
Do not lose hope.

Thursday July 31, 2008 1:06 matdog420

It definitely would, because their pitching is awesome. But one player is not going to make that much of a difference when Matt Stairs is your team leader with 11 home runs.
Thursday July 31, 2008 1:07

Thursday July 31, 2008 1:08 matdog420

They would have to be open to it. I know that he is "off-limits," but Grabow will be a huge addition to the bullpen, an upgrade over Trever Miller, and Bay would fill the need for a RH bat. But they are really high on him.

Thursday July 31, 2008 1:10 CoachBrian

CoachBrian, you are not Brian Sabean, are you? I hope not. The Giants do not have any real trading chips. They locked up Rowand to such an expensive deal. Tyler Walker has surfaced in some rumors, but they are not going to part with their one valuable asset, young starting pitching depth. They have a strong core with Tim Lincecum, who is nasty, and Matt Cain.

He has been linked to Florida, which tried to get Pudge before the Yankees, and are also pursuing several other veteran catchers, including Greg Zaun, Ramon Hernandez and Gerald Laird. So, it is unlikely that he will get shipped. The favorite appears to be Laird, though. Aurilia has been linked to the Twins, who are dangling Boof Bonser.

Yeah, but Beckham is still at least five years away and has left a lot to be desired with his performance at Princeton to this point. Brignac is a great defensive shortstop, but his on-base skills are not exactly stellar, either. The Rays are high on him, though Bartlett is an excellent defender and will man the position for the time being. The Rays will have to part with either him or Hellickson, though, if they want Bay.

Thursday July 31, 2008 1:30 nadir
1:33
Agreed. The Astros, who should not have dealt for Randy Wolf, are delusional. They think they are contenders. They are not, playing in the best division in the NL with three legitimate contenders. Shawn Chacon's chokehold on GM has messed with his brain. They stripped the farm system bear for Tejada, who is not getting the job done offensively and earning his paycheck. They are five players away from competing. They need to think future. If not, they are only going to continue to struggled with mediocrity for years. The longer it takes to rebuild the system, the longer they will sit near the cellar. The Killer B Days are long gone. They should not have traded for a reliever as well. It is going to be a long couple of years down in Houston.

They do not deserve credit for that, MatDog. They deserve to be laughed at. They are a long way from being talented enough to compete. Hellickson has tremendous command, advanced for a young pitcher. He went 7-0 with a sick K/W ratio in the Florida State League before his promotion. He does not profile as an ace--and his size turns off some scouts--but he is going to be a consistent innings eater who will not walk any one at the major league level. He has been roughed up at Montgomery, but he is a real good young pitcher.

Griffey is not going to make a huge upgrade for the White Sox. There is really no room for him, he is no longer good enough to play center field--where he could play if they move Nick Swisher--and his offensive skills are on the decline. The deal will not make that much of an impact, but at least he gets a chance at a ring. It was good for the Reds to get his salary off the books.

Bay not heading to the bay With the 4 p.m. ET Trade Deadline past, a baseball source in Tampa Bay confirmed that no deal was struck between the Rays and Pirates to send Jason Bay to Tampa Bay in exchange for prospects. While there remains the possibility that another team could have snuck in an offer before 4 p.m., it appears right now that Bay is staying in Pittsburgh. No other substantial offers were known to be on the table. -- Jenifer Langosch
