There's much more of a global issue involved--literature compares it to prison system. American students are required to be at school by law--they are not there by choice. Offers much more complicated aspects to discipline.....

in response to Alex's question: I think the only way to effectively uphold our education system is through comprehensive efforts to build a sense of community through meaningful relationships between all stakeholders...children are gaining more and more power as time goes on from a legal aspect to research discussing their needs and how we need to reach them to their desire for autonomy that society/parents apparently feels obligated to respect...We can learn a lot from children, but we as adults are the ones with the cognitive ability and responsibility to ensure the success and growth of future generations...Especially in today's generation, we really need to focus as a community addressing the needs and issues we face through our children
