My thoughts exactly. I find it incredibly disrespectful that they would delay telecast it. If you arent going to show an event live, give it to SBS who know what they are doing. I can see this being the Channel 7 'events that we deem important' olympics only. I'll get my coverage from the internet or SBS news thanks very much.

I am Disgusted. Talk about setting off on the wrong foot. Sure, delay a football game between 2 other nations, but to delay the FIRST Australian contest of ANY sport is not excusable (let alone the football). I will be welcoming the (commercial free) abc coverage on my wireless, Seven has lost another viewer for the duration of the Olympics, and probably well in to the future.

Over here in Beijing we get live feeds of sports on a set of televisions but no commentary. It's a strange way to watch - but it's live, no ads and certainly no delay. Disappointingly, there are no models either.

who is the football commentator for channel 7? Clearly not used to commentating REAL football - pathetic effort! Also, what was with cutting into the delayed telecast to do a live cross for the announcement of flag bearer? First event ought to have been broadcast "live", then no conflict with the announcement ....

I'm not gonna defend Ch7 here, it's a bloody farce, but it was pretty much the same thing with Ch10 when the Indian Premier League was on. Okay Australia wasn't playing then, but half the Aus team was playing in many of the teams and Ch10 telecast the first game somewhere close to midnight, after the game had finished.....sports telecasting in this country seriously needs a bloody overhaul. Don't hold your breath though
Thursday August 7, 2008 10:27 PK

It is worth holding your breath in Beijing. Should have seen the smog today! I agree with you PK ... although drawing any sort of comparison between the IPL and the first Aussie event in an Olympic Games is pretty thin.

very poor... i thought it was live until they cut into it for a heap of commercials and promos and when we went back we hadn't missed any play!!!!. having just the one commentator was also stupid, you need an expert to bounce off to add a bit of variety to the call. he also inadvertantely let slip that he obviously wasn't at the stadium in Shanghai but in the broadcast centre in Beijing calling off a monitor. Maybe the smog's drifted down to australia and has cloudecd their judgement ...

seven have proved over many years that they DO NOT give Football a fair go. their lack of respect for the australian public who have increasingly taken Football to their hearts through the sucess of the Socceroos and the A_League is clear. lets put this to one side and support our football teams in Beijing... the world is watching.. Cutting to 10 ads (!) 5 minsutes befpore 1/2 time when there is a 15 minute break anyway and directly (!) after australia scored against the serbs severly disrupted the viewing spectacle for us and showed a lack of understanding

So, are we actually going to be able to see the Opening Ceremony, or are we going to be treated to a coverage similar to the Rugby Union game that was played in fog ... all we really got were shadows, and an audio commentary ?

I think even if it's smoggy it will be ok. The long shots of the fireworks may look a bit smudged but inside the Bird's Nest it will be a television event to be remembered.

Live would have been better, but the fact that they didn't say it was delayed and even implied that it was live, 'We cross back to Shanghai Stadium...' or wherever it was, just shows contempt for their audience. In this digital age, you just can't get away with that. If, like me, you're pretty filthy about that, do what I did: pick up the phone and call Channel Seven (02) 8777 7777 and tell them so.

I thought the coverage last night was very poor. The start did not look promising when the commentator could not get the names of the players right and was discussing more about player facts than the game itself. Then to cut to James receiving the privilege of carrying the flag about 7 mins before half time and then to be followed at the 40th minute by 6 minutes of ads was disgraceful - why could this not be done at the half time break. The second half was no better with long breaks due to ads. I went onto the seven website to complain - did so, saw the score before the end of the game so went to bed. Overall, the first event to be covered by 7 and it turned out to be disgraceful. Lets hope they don't cut to ads just before Grant Hackett finishes the 1500......

Get used to this live fakery if you're going to be watching the Olympics because they will do it time and time and time again. And it's not just Channel Seven either. ABC Radio can be just as guilty of temporal time shifts. I remember driving to work during one Olympics and listening to a breathless anchor crossing back and forth to the weight-lifting to cover some Australian going for gold (involuntary shudder at that farnarkling phrase) -- and it had all unfolded on television before I'd left the house 15 minutes previously. If it ain't live, just say it! We'll cope!

I expected it to be live, and so managed to see the the half-time score online long before the match began. Pretty shonky. This coverage is going to be awful, with no chance of watching matches involving my favourite international sportsmen unless an Australian is also involved. Shouldn't we have live streams available for all the sports by now? We can't even look at the YouTube Olympics channel from Australia.

Typical Channel 7 trying to pretend they are broadcasting live when everyone knows this isn't so. Really though protests should be forwarded to the companies that advertise during these events. It's the money that drives all these programming decisions by the television stations after all and not any altruistic desire to meet the needs of the viewers.

i cant believe in this day and age i cant choose to watch what game/event I want. Channel 7 really screwed the football up last night with a delayed telecast. And the commentator was awful...didn't no play names and he also struggled with a few general rules. Not to mention the fact he said 'national competition' and 'team' rather than 'A-League' and 'Newcastle Jets'. What an absolute disgrace that was!

I can't believe in this day and age, I can't choose what game/event I want to watch. This means I'll be missing out on viewing some of the worlds best athletes perform their stuff. Also what a disgrace channel 7 is with the football last night. Delayed coverage. Ads at crucial moments. Actually ads full stop. Commentator was pathetic, he couldn't pronounce a lot of the names right and you could tell he didn't know even some of the basic rules. Also made me made when he said 'national competition' and 'team' instead of 'A-League' and 'Newcastle Jets'. Obviously didn't want to give Fox Sports any privileges. Channel 7 needs to wake up to themselves!!

I was so disappointed in the coverage that I went online and got the result, changed channel and waited until near the end of the broadcast to see the goals... Channel 7 has had 12 games of football at their disposal and chose to show 1 that was delayed, had ads all through it and then stopped to show the announcement of the flag bearer. Now that may be a good thing but show it at half time or after the game - it wont matter to him that we didn't see him until half time in a crucial game in the group of death for our young footballers. BTW - everyone knew anyway as it was platered all over the radio last night anyway (long before the official announcement).

Do channel 7 walk around with their eyes closed... Football on Fox sports is one of the most watched if not THE most watched sport on pay tv and they do what they did last night. I am now scanning the net to find live broadcasters so I can watch the sports live and not wait for the Channel 7 ads to interrupt --- he shoots, it rebounds off the post, he follows up the shot, surely he can't miss from there (how green is your grass, use grass grower plus to keep your bindies out and your grass as green as..............

What I also found particlarly poor was the lack of atmosphere coming through from the crowd. It was almost as though they were playing behind closed doors. So how much of any sport will be live? Very Poor Effort 7!

Hopefully there is some explanation for this. I wasn't actually aware of the delay until I went online after the sport, hahaha. Delay aside, I was impressed with the HD quality on my HD plasma. Flicking normal 7 and 7HD, i could see a huge difference. So at this stage I'm not too worried, as long as the delayed coverage doesn't happen again.

Well it must be of no suprise that the 'second most popular sport at the Olympics' (gymnastics), that its premier event - women's team final - will not be telecast live at this point, and even if the Aussie girls make the team finals, there is still no guarantee. The swimmers barely breath and there is a camera covering their every move but unless you're a gold medal certainty, you can expect no love from Channel 7. Pathetic.

I also love Ch7's detailed TV guides. From the ebroadcast site for Monday, 7 have, from midday to 6pm "Olympics". SBS's guide at the same time has everything broken into nice little chunks including start and finish times for Volleyball, handball, beach volleyball, boxing, water polo and basketball. That's treating us with some respect. Looking forward to the handball, got hooked on that last games. Silly sport (no offence to handballers out there). Good way to get hurt I reckon.

I dont belive that when Australia scored a goal they took a break and went to 10 mins of adverts, we wait the whole game for a goal and then part of a football fans celebration is enjoying that goal. Disgusted that 7 treated this like an AFL game and went to adverts. Not being live..are we just whinging here? is 7 going to take notice? Will they make a comment? Will the other media houses run with this story and make it an issue?
