2012 Divisional Chat: AL East

3:02
The Winter Meetings are a little more than a week away, so let's start our Divisional Chat series with the only division to boast three 90-win teams this year.

Did the Blue Jays do enough to be considered AL East favorites?
Yes

Do the sox get napoli and swisher.
Sunday November 25, 2012 3:03 Tony

I think they'll reel in Napoli but not Swisher. Boston seems to be going all in on dead-pull RHB for Fenway.

Can the O's repeat the magic they had in 2012 if they were to field the team they have today?
Sunday November 25, 2012 3:03 Alex
3:04
No, only because it's impossible to expect them to have a historic record in one-run games and to go nearly undefeated in extra innings again. Bullpens are very volatile from year-to-year. Doesn't mean they won't be good next year, but I wouldn't count on so many close wins again.

Will the Jays make any other moves during the offseason?
Sunday November 25, 2012 3:04 Guest

Yeah, definitely. Nothing as significant as what they've already done, but I'm sure they'll bring in a few more arms.

What must the Red Sox do to contend next year?
Sunday November 25, 2012 3:05 G
3:06
First and foremost: figure out what happened to Lester. They need to upgrade that rotation and there's pretty much no one they can realistically bring in who is as good as Lester when right.

Do Reynolds and McLouth return to Baltimore and if not, who replaces them?
Sunday November 25, 2012 3:07 Omazing Joe

McLouth yes, Reynolds no. They seem like a fit for someone like Jason Bay, a roll the dice guy.

Napoli having great numbers against Sox: A product of him fitting at Fenway, or an Indication of how terrible Boston's pitching has been in the last few years.

Small sample size more than anything.

Think this is the year the Rays trade Shields?
Sunday November 25, 2012 3:08 Diggs
3:08
I don't think so. I think Hellickson is first in line to be traded, and I wouldn't be surprised if Price went before Shields at some point in the next 12 months. Price will be out of this world expensive.

Can the jays compete with what the marlins couldn't?
Sunday November 25, 2012 3:09 Shane

Yes because the supporting cast is so much better. Outside of Stanton and half-a-season of Sanchez, the Marlins didn't have much around those guys.

Sunday November 25, 2012 3:10 Frank

Do the Blue Jays get another bat for DH or do you think that Adam Lind can finally put it together and hit about .270 with power?
Sunday November 25, 2012 3:12 Jonny

I think Lind gets another chance. He and Encarnacion will rotate DH and 1B responsibilities, most likely.

[Comment From JordanJordan: ]
Do you think Gibbons was the right hire for the jays? and if not who would you have gone with?
Sunday November 25, 2012 3:13 Jordan
3:14
I thought it was interesting that both young ALE GMs (AA and Cherington) went with managers they know well and have a history with during a crucial offseason. Gibbons was a good hire in my opinion. He's smart with the bullpen and the lack of accountability we saw last year will be a thing of the past.

RED SOX BULLPEN=Second to Orioles bullpen in AL East? Yankees are not as good, and Rays are always shaky, Toronto can mash, but they don't have as good a bullpen as the Sox
Sunday November 25, 2012 3:14 Joe
3:15
Assuming Rivera re-signs, Bailey is fifth best closer in the division. Who knows what they'll get out of Bard and Melancon at this point. Red Sox needs arms, lots of 'em.
Sunday November 25, 2012 3:15
3:15
[Comment From TrevorTrevor: ]
Do you think the Jays need to target an established closer?
Sunday November 25, 2012 3:15 Trevor
3:16
No, I really like Janssen. There's plenty of room for another very good late-inning arm though. Madson would be a great fit there in my opinion. Wouldn't have to be "the guy" right away, but there's a clear path for him to take over the closer's role if he bounced back.

Sunday November 25, 2012 3:21 Ryan

I really think a trade with the Royals is coming. I wouldn't be surprised if Friedman pulled Hosmer away, but they still need an OF, a DH, a SS, etc...

Since David Ross signed with the Red Sox, do you think they'll trade Salty?
Sunday November 25, 2012 3:22 Nick

Do the Orioles try to trade some of their young pitchers for Billy Butler or Giancarlo Stanton?
Sunday November 25, 2012 3:22 Sean
3:23
I think Stanton is out of the question for anyone right now. Butler makes sense for the O's, but would they give up Britton and/or Tillman to get it done?

3:23
[Comment From WayneWayne: ]
I omitted a full season from a healthy Ellsbury. There's another 3-4 wins. Now at 84-85, I've probably overstated my case, but still they're a .500 team pending moves.
Sunday November 25, 2012 3:23 Wayne
3:24
Eh, depends on your opinion of Ellsbury. A "full season from a healthy Ellsbury" has happened once in the last three years.

Sunday November 25, 2012 3:30 Max

Sunday November 25, 2012 3:31 Rondo

Sure, but he's one of the 10-15 best OF in the game. KC would want a young, MLB ready SP, and I don't think the Sox would part with Buchholz to get him. Doubront's not enough, Barnes isn't ready.

I think it's an overpay, but so far the market looks to be a little wacky. Could look pretty good in a few weeks.

Is there any chance that the Yankees re-sign Swisher?

I wouldn't get my hopes up. They seem to have turned the page.

What new guys will the Yankees sign/acquire this offseason?
Sunday November 25, 2012 3:51 John

I think they'll bring back largely the same team next year. Maybe a shiny new reliever like Soria and Scott Hairston instead of Andruw Jones, but nothing major.

What do the orioles need to part with to pry Felix from Seattle? He's the best pitcher in baseball in my opinion.

Would have to start with Machado and Bundy, wouldn't they?

who benefits more in this deal? To Texas - Rasmus, d'Arnaud, Bonifacio, (either Comer or McGuire) for Kinsler and either Perez or Holland??

The Jays would. Getting the best player in the trade (by far).

Could the Orioles pry David Wright from the Mets without giving up Machado, Bundy and Gausman?
Sunday November 25, 2012 3:53 Zander
3:54
I wouldn't count on it. Their system really drops off after those three. Mets want a catcher, but no way would the O's give up Wieters.

Cherington? I know they need OF help, but I'd shop Ellsbury. See how much a team like Texas or Cincy really wants him.

Is Boston's interest in Napoli strictly as a 1B, or would he get playing time at C as well?
Sunday November 25, 2012 3:55 Kyle

Seems like they want him primarily as a 1B with a few starts at C and DH mixed in.

You think a guy like Lincecum is available for Jays after being moved to the pen?
Sunday November 25, 2012 3:56 Guest
3:56
Yes I think he would be available, but I don't think he's in the bullpen for good. I'd let him try starting again at his age. The Jays have had interest in him in the past (remember the Lincecum-Rios rumor like six years ago?) and frankly he seems like another great roll of the dice guy for them.

Lincecum for Ellsbury
Sunday November 25, 2012 3:57 john

That would be interesting. Both guys signed for just one more year, Boston needs SP, SF needs OF. I'd probably want more if I was SF, Lincecum's track record >>> Ellsbury's.

Do you think the Rays could trade for Danny Espinosa. He is more than capable at shortstop, and the nats could use a number 5 pitcher.
Sunday November 25, 2012 3:58 zach

Yes, I definitely think they could. He's be a great fit, adds some power. I'm a big Espinosa fan, perhaps too big.

I bet one throws fewer than that, but that's the big x-factor for the Jays. They took on a lot of risk with their moves so far.

Can't see. Ethier is signed for 5/85 (!). Swisher's a better player and they could probably re-sign him for 4/52.
