Quick pass, quick pass, quick pass. On second-and-eight, Lemon took the shotgun snap and was forced to throw the ball too quickly falling incomplete. I think it was Nedu on the blitz that forced the incomplete. Then third down, Lemon threw a nice pass to Booker who just dropped it. Then Marvin White dropped him.
Sunday December 30, 2007 1:08

Dolphins kick field goal and lead 3-0. The Bengals defense is playing a tad bit soft and the Dolphins, except for the series that missed the first down, threw the ball quickly and well.

After three pass attempts and a fumbled snap exchange (what looked like a run) the Bengals finally do handoff for a limited gain. On third-and-seven, Palmer drops back and pumps to the left. He threw the pass to the left incomplete. The Dolphins were called for face mask.

While lining up for third and one, the Bengals replaced the defense with 5-6 guys. No matter. The Dolphins lined up and powered a QB sneak for first. The Dolphins are using an assortment of quick passes and rushes. On first, Lemon, SHOULD have been sacked. Geathers ran threw untouched and the QB ran backwards. He escaped Geathers and rolled out throwing the ball away.

Horrible play call - why don't the Bengals use play action in obvious running situations? Somehow, a zone block right does not seem like a smart play call in this situation, considering the D-Line has been owning the O-Line all game. Sweet Bratkowski....

Bengals line up third-and-eight. Palmer, in shotgun, takes the snap and Chad couldn't control the ball as he kept his feet in bounds. Vols, I think we're around 9-12.

Odell has all the talent in the world, but can this defense take that risk...I don't think do. There's got to be more to his situation than we know about because they suspended him all this year. We need players we can count on being there, not hope are there. And he hasn't played in 2 years. I say draft a pass rush specialist in the 1st round, another LB in the 2nd round, and then look WR and TE for the next couple of rounds

Another key is Brady's willingness to run for a few yards to keep drives alive. Even with a bum knee, Carson should still pull the ball down more, particularly in situations where first downs are more important than a big play.

all conversations with chad have somehow pointed to frustration due to lack of potential in the upcoming years. hes pushing 30 sooner than never, and hes not going to get a ring or any kind of recognition unless he can work within a squad. i dont get mad at the blow ups, i do get mad at the play calls the coaches work, and the lack of attention to our o line getting pushed around with carson still tentative about that knee, why else would he hold on the ball and do his tippy toe o line hoedown dance every time he needs to step up and make those deep throws we remember from 05-some of 06

[Comment From TarZanderTarZander: ]
It really is about knowing the situation. Sometimes, pulling the ball down and gaining 5 yards on 2nd and 8 is better than throwing into tight coverage and ending up with 3rd and 8. Moreover, if Palmer shows a modicum of willingness to run, opposing defenses will react to his movement in the pocket more, thus opening up more things down the field.

i spoke to my friend tj wright, rookie DB the bengals released a month or two ago, and while he was visiting me in NYC we spoke to deltha over the phone a few times as TJ was trying to find a good place to buy some new kicks in brooklyn and deltha had some ideas for him. i couldnt help but spark a dreaded bengal discussion for them both, and oneal had some interesting insights. mainly, the agreement was that the players had lost faith in their coaches, more importantly, they felt they were playing up so that others could play down, either through fault of execution by players or by lack of trust in the coaching decisions. i dont think this includes marvin, but can you imagine watching your defense make you execute plays, as you watch the other teams defense stare you in the face for half of a season with that look in their eye that says, wheres chris henry, we are sitting in a double x 4-3. dont even think about chad or tj, and the funny thing is, our players and coaches bought it, and played into every teams hands. sorry long one!

tj was a great solid player at OU, never got in trouble, and constantly put in extra time with palmer in his private workouts. he had the respect of his teammates and given some time could adjust just the same as hall or joseph has. its a shame to get rid of a good nickel back or even sub FS in quarter downs. he had a tendency to create turnovers just the same as odell did. yet the coaches let him slip by just like toeina (sp?) bresnahan basically makes me sick simply because the guy just doesnt know whats going on on the sideline. he seems to be pacing back and forth after every defensive call cursing the issues, instead of trying to fix them and letting his players play it out instead of adjusting them to think less of themselves

when i said some players play up some play down, i meant bad coaching schemes and ineffective play calls have led players to become lax and not as engaging at the line of scrimmage simply because they dont believe in what they are being asked to do.

a funny thought on the Chad thing is that perhaps you move Chad for some defensive help. You could do it if you could rely on RBs to help on the receiving. This would allow the team to carry extra backs and if you had Perry, Irons, and Dorsey available they may be able to receiving threats.

Unfortunately this is the NFL and trades just don't happen much, especially not for great players. So no matter what you might want to do, best you could get for Chad would be a draft pick and then you'd have to pick another receiver in the 1st 2 rounds and WR is one of the hardest positions for a rookie to do well at...so you set yourself back at least a year on an offense that isn't all that great, good, but not great

So quick question. What did you guys think of the Cover It Live blogging software? Not bad? Could be better? Stick with the old routine?

Well, in fairness, T.J. had the chance but dropped an easy catch. But it would have been nice to have that 113th catch.

I would also like to get something that allows me to select the people that have free reign. People, like you guys, that can comment and it goes in right away. I don't want to approve the comments. I trust you guys to make it work. I understand the point though in case of trolls...

yes! I was surprised at how high Smith's percentage is and how low Rudi's is. Considering that Marvin is in Rudi's corner I felt it would be higher and based on the Smith comments I've heard I surprised too.

Sunday December 30, 2007 4:14

I'll be honest, David. I'm not sure why the team kept going after Rudi when Watson proved he can be the feature back and carry the ball enough to be productive.

Sunday December 30, 2007 4:16 jon

I'm not Ted. I just get the impression, mostly from comments that Deltha says (unhappy not starting, being the latest) that makes me believe he's wanting to leave. Though, I admit, I just convey what I hear and we all know you can't believe what you read.
Sunday December 30, 2007 4:17

We have some good young talent in the secondary. It's the conversion that we thought would make our linebackers damn good in 2005. If things went well and the things with Pollack and Odell don't happen, I honestly believe this defense is set to be great. But I always was a bit of an optimist.

he was unhappy about not starting, but you have to understand, he has taken many of the corners that have been with the team throughout the season under his wing and supported them to play their best ability. my friend said he was fantastic at conveying the right attitudes about playing the game
Sunday December 30, 2007 4:21 ted

i almost feel like bengals.com is too open in their coverage. a lot of our strategy for the upcoming game and the status of players is given away in the articles. belichick often stays mum as does tomlin. both coaches with tight locker rooms, and unpredictability in play calling at important times.
