Obama at Van Andel(05/14/2008)

Kyla King:
Many of the folks lined up outside the Van Andel Arena waiting to see Sen. Barack Obama speak tonight may have been cold and wet but they sure weren't hungry.
By noon, many in the group of about 70 people were munching on tasty gourmet pizzas, sandwich wraps and quesidillas.
The hot food was delivered courtesy of staff at Bobarinos Sports Bar from the nearby B.O.B bar and restaurant complex.
The enterprising restaurant began taking orders after hearing about the ever-growing line.
"I was getting coffee at the bar and happened to mention it," said Kalamazoo resident Guy Hummel as he chowed on a ham and pineapple, wood-fired pizza.
Hummel, along with his wife,Karen, and 16-year-old son, Sam, had staked out their place in line at about 10 a.m.
But aside from an umbrella and blanket, the trio had nothing else to sustain them until the arena's doors opened at 5 p.m.
So what was Hummel planning to do if the B.O.B. hadn't come to the rescue?
"I have no idea," he said laughing. "Starve I guess. It's be worth it for Barack."

Kyla King:
Aaron Gifford and Josh Morin made the drive from Kalamazoo to Grand Rapids Wednesday morning figuring they'd have a captive -- and supportive -- audience among the folks lined up outside the Van Andel Arena.
      Turns out they were right.
Within in a half hour of arriving, the two had collected about 30 signatures for a petition drive that aims to put a measure on the ballot that would authorize stem cell research.
"If they're here to see Obama we figure they would probably support it because he supports it," Gifford said.

Kyla King:
Rev. Ronald Smith may be new to Grand Rapids but he's no stranger to Barack Obama.
Smith recently transplanted to the area from the Southside of Chicago, which is included in Obama's U.S. Senate and former state house district.
He has twice voted for Obama and seen him speak once before.
But that didn't stop him from camping out in the rain Monday morning to secure a place in line for the first-come, first-serve event.
"Everybody says 'where did he come from? Who is he? Well we (in Chicago) know who he is," Smith said. "Barack actually worked in the projects. This guy can relate to the neighborhoods."

Kyla -

Protesters standing outside the Van Andel Arena drew cat calls from Obama supporters as they filed past to enter the venues.

The group of mostly students from Grand Valley State University held signs that read "I'm not bitter" "I (heart) my God, Guns and Small Town" "What experience?"   "My pastor isn't a racist" and "Audacity of Hype."

Grand Rapids resident Amanda Zalucky, who plans to vote for Sen. John McCain, said the crowd reaction had been "a little hostile," but she was undeterred.

"I think it's kind of hypocritical of Obama to come right now and ask for our vote in the fall when he didn't care about us in the primary," she said.

Most of the people I've talked to inside are unaware that Obama will take the stage early and that John Edwards will be at his side. From Kristi -
For 45-year-old Kalamazoo resident Patricia Davis, an hour drive to Grand Rapids to catch a glimpse of Sen. Barack Obama was nothing - neither was the two-hour wait in the rain that ensued to get into the Van Andel Arena to see the potential next president.
“He seems sincere,” she said. “When he speaks, I believe. He doesn’t just say stuff to get elected.”
As Davis rounded the corner of the arena, vendors selling T-shirts and buttons with Obama’s face plastered on them begged her to purchase for support. But she just tapped her brand new Obama ‘08 baseball cap with her index finger and smiled.
“To be honest, I got the hat because I thought it was going to rain,” Davis said.

“I’ve only been waiting for 25 minutes, but really, I’ve been waiting the last four years,” said 31-year-old Jessica Mills.
The East Lansing resident trekked to Grand Rapids to witness Sen. Barack Obama speak at the Van Andel Arena Wednesday. Clutching a Taco Bell wrapper and sipping on her drink, Mills and her friends were shuffled through the lines to get inside the arena.
“What’s most appealing is he listens to people, people believe in him,” Mills said. “He’s a positive man. He gives people a sense that the track we’re on is changeable. (He’s) bringing people together.”
The ability to mobilize the hundreds of people, many of whom are college aged or first-time voters, signifies unity, she added.
“No other politician has had this effect,” Mills said. “There are very few politicians we invest in anymore.”

Although Sen. Barack Obama will not be at the Van Andel Arena for about another hour, that didn’t stop 52-year-old Craig VanderMaas from waiting in line to see the presidential hopeful.
He’d only been standing there 20 minutes and was prepared to wait much, much longer.
“There’s a lot of excitement here,” the Grand Rapids native said. “He’s a different type of a politician, one who doesn’t play games. His honesty and trustworthiness, you can literally see the support people have for him.”
Supporters donned buttons, hats and T-shirts all promoting one message: Change.
“I hope he finds real answers,” VanderMaas said.

I don't have health care, because I have a pre-existing condition and the premiums are $600 / month with a $5,000 yearly deductible. I am only 33. Humana, HealthPoint, etc. spend what must be thousands and millions to up billboards and ads on TV. They put me through the ringer, so I chose to go without. Yet it is my choice - I don't want to be mandated and penalized, but I do want to have the option to join a Medicare type plan and pay for it.

Thank you Jana. But I've been without health care since October 1. I'm creating a start up Internet company (moved out of Michigan to Chicago, by the way to do so). I'm rolling the dice, but I do wish I had the option to buy reasonably priced health care as I seek to build a company that will create jobs and tax revenue down the road.

Jeff, don't move to Ca, it's EXTREMELY expensive to live here these days. My husband and I pay $976.00 a month for Blue Shield of Ca. My husband partially retired and I quit working when he and I married. We've been lucky to this point but, you never know. My husband is an Electrical Engineer, designs computer chips for integrated circuits. There is NO REASON citizens of THIS country should go without health care. Unfortunately, it has gone on waaaaay too long as it is. Jeff, by the way, we are living on $5000.00 per month. That isn't a brag, just a fact. If it wasn't for my husband's achievements, I don't know where I would be today. I'm VERY lucky. I DO wish you the best. Jana

McCain sees Michigan as up for grabs, and has pretty good support (dating back to 2000), but he'll never match Obama as a star attraction or on the stump. The JumboTron screen continuously showed the Obama '08 logo instead of the actual man that thousands came to see, angering at least one mother who arrived with her six children.
