What did you think of the judging during the gymnastics competition?
Friday August 15, 2008 11:54 Lucy
11:55
I'm not an expert on the technical scoring of gymnastics, but I thought, like all of the NBC commentators, the scores for the Chinese gymnasts seemed too high and the scores for the American gymnasts seemed too low.
Friday August 15, 2008 11:55
11:56
Having said that, I think the Chinese gymnasts deserved to win the team competition, and Nastia Liukin and Shawn Johnson performed well enough to make sure the judging didn't matter in the individual all-around.
Friday August 15, 2008 11:56
11:56
A much bigger scandal is the issue of China using apparently underage gymnasts.

What's your pick for gold-silver-bronze in the men's 100?
Friday August 15, 2008 11:57 Bronco
11:57
Gold: Usain Bolt, Jamaica
Silver: Tyson Gay, USA
Bronze: Asafa Powell, Jamaica

what about women's 100 meters? Who's this year's FloJo?
Friday August 15, 2008 12:01 Spencer
12:02
There won't be a FloJo this year; no one is going to replicate the way she blew away the field.
Friday August 15, 2008 12:02
12:03
But if you're asking me who I think is going to win, I think that much like the men's it comes down to the U.S. and Jamaica, and I would probably give the edge to Jamaica's Kerron Stewart over Americans Muna Lee and Torri Edwards.

The supposidly 15-year old Chinese Gymnast shouldn't have gotten Bronze. Plain and simple.
Friday August 15, 2008 12:03 Gold Medal
12:05
I think a lot of people would agree with that. I'm a little surprised I haven't heard any complaints from the Russians, since it was a Russian, Ksenia Semenova, who finished fourth.

Friday August 15, 2008 12:05 Guest

I assume you're referring to this year's USA men's basketball team, which I don't really think we should call the Dream Team. But anyway, I do think they'll win the gold.

Will Team USA win the soccer gold? (Women)
Friday August 15, 2008 12:06 Peter
12:07
I don't think so. I think they'll beat Japan to get to the gold medal game, but I would pick either Germany or Brazil (more likely Brazil) to beat the U.S. and win the gold.

Thanks for writing in all caps, LAURA; I wouldn't have known you felt strongly about it otherwise. I enjoy beach volleyball and am glad NBC gives it some time. I'm not crazy about the way NBC presents the Olympics, but at least we've been able to see some solid events live in prime time.

It's Germany and Brazil in one women's soccer semifinal, so they've got a chance.
Friday August 15, 2008 12:09
12:11
By the way, regarding NBC, I should add that I'd be annoyed if I lived in the Pacific time zone that they're not showing it live there. That annoyed me when I lived in California for the 2000 and 2002 Olympics.
Friday August 15, 2008 12:11
12:11
Although I don't think they showed 2000 live in the Eastern time zone, either.

they are doing a lousy job of showing ALL sports, they focus on the same sports over and over. If you go to their listings and try to tape or see what they say they are showing, it is not on their! VERY FRUSTRATING!!

the problem with the tv coverage for the west coast, is that you can go online and see who won what race, etc 15 + hours earlier. NBC wants us to think this is live coverage of the games, hahahaaaa
Friday August 15, 2008 12:13 Guest
12:14
I think it's wrong of NBC to say, "This is live," and not make clear that that's only true if you're watching it in the Eastern or Central time zones.

Friday August 15, 2008 12:16 Judy
12:16
No, I personally don't want to watch pistols, but I would like to see more weightlifting, judo, taekwondo, boxing, and several other sports that aren't getting a lot of attention.

If the Chinese gymnasts are found to be underage, what do you think should happen to their gold medals?
Friday August 15, 2008 12:38 Robert

They should be stripped. The Americans should get the gold in the team competition if the accusations that the Chinese used underage gymnasts are true. (And I do believe those accusations.)

They are from a diverse cross-section of the world, that is true. They're not all Chinese. But there are suggestions that they want the Chinese to win and will err on the side of helping the host nation. I can't say for sure that's happening, but that's what many observers believe.

With 1.2 billion people the odds of winning gold are in the Chinese favor. At any age if an athelete can perform as well as them challenge them, I doubt there are any gymnist under age in the US that could beat them. As far as fear goes... kids fear of failing the ones who teach them.

It's interesting, countries with bigger populations are obviously going to get more golds than countries with smaller populations, but there are plenty of exceptions, starting with India, which has a billion people but hardly ever wins any medals at all.
