We work/learn best when it matters to us. Our job is to help kids understand what truly matters to them.

Key tennants:
1. Create caring institutions (we teach kids, not subjects)
2. Student centered--why we are there. It is not about us.
3. Inquiry-driven education--what are the questions we can ask together?
4. Passionate--it has to matter. (e.g. students at academy developed brand new means of processing biodiesel.)
5. Metacognitive--think about thinking.
6. Technology Infused--ubiquitous, necessary, and invisible. (Critical, but not THE central thing in learning)

7. Understanding driven--and project-based. Projects are done to demonstrate understanding, not just for the sake of the process.

Technology Overload and how to prevent it.

What is good? A better question than "what is new?" The best tech tool is the one we will actually use.

Technology should allow us to :
Research (RSS, Delicious, Google, Wikipedia)
Collaborate (Wiki, Google Docs, Moodle)
Create (Blogging, Drupal, etc., etc.)
Network (Twitter, Skype, Facebook, Email)
Present (uStream, Flickr, iTunesU)

Strong pedagogical tools and framework are a must--these determine what tools are used to get where users want to go. We need to focus less on the tools, more on the pedagogy.

All teachers use UBD. Students hear language, see familiar techniques, create familiar projects, are assessed using same 5 categories.

How much more learning could be done with such familiarity? Kids spend more time learning, less trying to figure out their teachers and the "game".

Step 1--Desired Results
Establish Goals
Understandings--The big ideas. Why are we teaching this?
Essential Questions--The throughline--What do we keep coming back to?
Skills and Content--What is all the stuff that kids will have to know or know about to get to the big ideas?

Step 2--Assessment Evidence
The $1,000,000 question
What form of assessment? In PBL, it should be the kids' final projects, not a test.
Test/quizzes are "dipsticks"--quick assessments of students knowledge/mastery of specific skills or objectives.
Assessment it real measurement--determines if skills can be transferred to meaningful action.
Assessment is all-too-often viewed as the closure, the end of learning a particular topic.
