Saints chat(04/30/2008)

Hi everyone. This is Times-Picayune deputy sports editor Kevin Spain with Saints beat writers Jimmy Smith and Mike Triplett here to talk to you about the Saints. Let's talk draft, camp and your questions on the upcoming season.

Do you think the Saints would make a deal to land Shockey and do you think that we need him? What do you think it take to get him?

SO what is happening with Free Agent signings?
Wednesday April 30, 2008 12:06 Tim
12:06
JIMMY SMITH: The Shockey deal, from what I'm told, is not dead. Sean Payton, apparently, is transfixed with Jeremy Shockey and it wouldn't be surprising at all if the deal is consummated in the near future, possibly before the minicamp at the end of June. Payton loves the player and believes, apparently, that he'd be a big upgrade at the position. The tight end position is important to the Saints offense as something other than another blocker, and Shockey could go a long way in improving the pass-catching aspect of that spot.

12:08

MIKE TRIPLETT: The Saints still haven’t released the list because they wait until the contracts are all signed. But these are some of the names that have been reported already:

LSU LB Luke Sanders, Houston LB/S Rocky Schwartz, TCU S David Roach, Stanford QB T.C. Ostrander, UNLV DE Jeremy Geathers, Boston College LB Jo-Lonn Dunbar and I believe San Diego State RB Lynell Hamilton.

Are you happy w/what the Saints did this off season and do you think they win the NFCS?
Wednesday April 30, 2008 12:08 westsidesaintsfan
12:09
JIMMY SMITH: Well, westsidesaintsfan, it's a little too early to make a prediction on just what might happen in the NFC South. We haven't seen any of these players on the field yet and in order to make an education prognostication, it's important to see what these guys look like in practice situations. Once we get the opportunity to see them on the field, we can better judge whether they can make an impact during games. Until then, it would be foolish to say the Saints would be able to contend for the NFC South.

Is there any interest in Lito Sheppard?
Wednesday April 30, 2008 12:10 Ray
12:11

MIKE TRIPLETT: I don’t think the Saints were ever as serious about Lito Sheppard as they were about Shockey – if they were interested at all. Saints Coach Sean Payton implied that those reports might have gotten exaggerated to drum up the trade interest around the league. … Now that the Saints added Tracy Porter and have seven cornerbacks on the roster, I don’t see much interest in Sheppard.

With the signing of Bobby McCray, do you think it would be a good move to pair him with Will Smith at DE and let Charles Grant play some DT alongside of Sedrick Ellis?
Wednesday April 30, 2008 12:11 Steve
12:12
JIMMY SMITH: There's a likelihood, Steve, that we'll see Charles Grant move inside some, at least experimentally. But the Saints coaches do a lot of rotation with their defensive linemen so the next step in that progression would be to insert Grant inside to see what he can do alongside McCray and, perhaps, Ellis. You're certain to see Ellis and Pressley on the field side-by-side as well as seeing each rookie opposite Hollis Thomas and Brian Young.

do you see any of the free agents named making the 53 man roster or practice squad and why?
Wednesday April 30, 2008 12:12 gbd6772
12:14

MIKE TRIPLETT: Sure, why not keep the streak alive? … The Saints really have proven over the last two years that they will evaluate every guy on the field without any bias or prejudice about how they got here. Marques Colston and Pierre Thomas are the prime examples. And what’s interesting is that the Saints are able to use those guys as sales pitches when they try to get these guys to sign here.

The problem will be finding roster spots. The Saints have a pretty deep and loaded roster right now. … But injuries always creep up.

Wednesday April 30, 2008 12:14 John
12:14
JIMMY SMITH: It's scheduled for next weekend, John, Friday Saturday and Sunday. But's it's closed to the media so we won't be able to see what these players look like until we're given the chance to watch some of the OTA sessions leading up to minicamp at the end of May.

I'm a bleed black and gold Saints fan trapped in Dallas!!! Listneing to talking heads on ESPN, the Panthers will win the NFC South. The Saints D via free agency and the draft should be vastly improved enough to make a serious playoff run. Your thoughts? I thnk the Saints should win the South. What has Carolina done that has so impressed the talking heads?
Wednesday April 30, 2008 12:16 Brian
12:17
JIMMY SMITH: Brian, it's a little too early to get your blood pressure up about anything anyone has to say about what's going to happen this fall. Relax, take a deep breath, and sit back awhile. The Panthers were very busy in the free-agent market this year and have a lot of new faces. That could be part of the reason people think they'll be improved. There's still a lot of uncertainty, though, at their quarterback position, so it's premature to label Carolina as the NFC South favorite.

[Comment From JarradJarrad: ]
I noticed the Saints didn't grab a LB in the draft, even a late rounder flyer type. How much do you think this speaks to their confidence in the current crew? We're banking a lot on the health of Morgan and Vilma, aren't we?
Wednesday April 30, 2008 12:18 Jarrad
12:19

MIKE TRIPLETT: Hey Jarrad. I think the Saints could have made room for an upgrade, if they had drafted a ready-made outside linebacker in Round 1 or 2. But they took care of their “insurance policies” in free agency. Remember, they re-signed Mark Simoneau, who can fill in at middle linebacker or weakside linebacker, and they still have Scott Shanle, who started at weakside linebacker the last two years … plus Troy Evans and Marvin Mitchell.

I agree that they need to get better at that position. And they are gambling that Vilma and Morgan will be the guys to do that. But a late-round flier wasn’t going to be a better fallback option than Shanle or Simoneau.

By the way, as I've said several times on these chats, I'm expecting big, big things from Vilma this year.

Do you think Mark Brunell will be on the roster when the season starts are one of the young QB's
Wednesday April 30, 2008 12:19 Greg
12:19
JIMMY SMITH: There's no question that Mark Brunell will be on the 53-man roster, Greg. The Saints need a qualified, veteran backup to Drew Brees and they wouldn't have signed him to a two-year contract if they didn't intend to keep him around. The team isn't ready to anoint Tyler Palko as Brees' heir apparent yet.. He needs more seasoning in Payton's offensive system. But Palko will be on the roster, too.

[Comment From Andrew A.Andrew A.: ]
what current or former player does Sedrick Ellis' game remind you of?
Wednesday April 30, 2008 12:22 Andrew A.
12:22

JIMMY SMITH: The one that comes to mind most immediately, Andrew A, would be a younger and slimmer Hollis Thomas. We've made those comparisons to Thomas with Ellis for the last week, even before the Saints made him their No. 1 pick. Ellis can collapse the pocket in the middle of the line to disrupt passers and we've seen Thomas do that when he was in the game in non-pass-rush situations. Ellis is also said be an active run-stuffer. It will be interesting to see the two side-by-side in an on-field situation.

I thought out of all of the receivers in the bowl games played, that Arrington was the most impressive. Why were Saints able to get him in 7th round? What do you think of him?
Wednesday April 30, 2008 12:23 Des
12:24

MIKE TRIPLETT: Arrington slipped in the draft because of some character concerns (not too serious, though, it seems) and maybe because he’s a little one-dimensional as a receiver. He’s very big with good hands, but he’s not exceptionally fast or versatile. I also don’t think he projects as much of a special-teams asset, so he would need to make the team as a top-three or top-four receiver, which will be difficult.

I think his size could help him stand out, though. I haven’t seen him stand next to Robert Meachem, but I assume he’s bigger than any of the Saints receivers, outside of Colston. And like we said before, the Saints are always willing to go with a guy if he looks great in camp, no matter what round they drafted him in.

[Comment From PaulPaul: ]
Do you guys think the Saints have adequately addressed their cornerback situation?
Wednesday April 30, 2008 12:26 Paul
12:26

JIMMY SMITH:      By sheer numbers, Paul, you would have to think that the Saints have more than adequately addressed their cornerback deficiencies. Randall Gay, Aaron Glenn and Tracy Porter are three more bodies, though we won't likely be seeing Fred Thomas around any more. Whether these additions can be upgrades, however, remains to be seen. We won't really be able to answer that accurately until training camp this summer.

Wednesday April 30, 2008 12:26
12:27
[Comment From GuestGuest: ]
Was Tracy Porter higher on the Saints' draft board than a good tight end like Fred Davis, who was available when N.O. picked in round 2?
Wednesday April 30, 2008 12:27 Guest
12:28

MIKE TRIPLETT: Yes. The Saints weren’t reaching to fill their biggest need when they drafted Porter. He had the highest grade of any player on the board at the time. It was a bonus that he just happened to fill their biggest need.

The Saints aren’t desperate at tight end. Yes, Payton would love to upgrade with Jeremy Shockey. But a second-round pick wouldn’t necessarily have been any better than Eric Johnson, Mark Campbell or Billy Miller. … One of these days they do need to find a guy they can develop, though.

What's up guys. Please explain to me why we're not actively trying to upgrade the safety position. I understand the faith they have in roman harper...but hasn't the Josh Bullocks experiment gone on long enough?
Wednesday April 30, 2008 12:29 Shawn
12:31
JIMMY SMITH: That's a very interesting hypothesis, Perrin. If Mike McKenzie has lost some of his cover-ability in the aftermath of his ACL injury, turning him into a safety might be an option. He's always seemed to play the run well and it might be an easy transition for him. Reponding to all those questions about the safety position, the Saints were obviously not entirely pleased with the play of Roman Harper last year since they dangled him as trade bait to the Giants in the Shockey talks. Kevin Kaesviharn seemed to come on at the end of the year. Josh Bullocks was somewhat spotty, playing well at times, playing inconsistent at others. With a new secondary coach on board, there could be some transitioning at that position this summer.

[Comment From Mike RizzutoMike Rizzuto: ]
I'm glad that the Saints traded down to get Sedrick Ellis. My question is, just how much more did the Saints like Glenn Dorsey than Ellis, and if Kansas City would have asked for this year's first and a third and next year's first round picks, could you have seen the Saints taking that offer instead of doing the deal for Ellis?
Wednesday April 30, 2008 12:32 Mike Rizzuto
12:33

MIKE TRIPLETT: Hey Mike, I think the Saints definitely like Dorsey enough to trade next year’s first-round pick for him. They were the ones that made the offer to Kansas City, and Kansas City turned them down. I don’t know the exact details of the offer, but it included next year’s first and another pick in this year’s draft, with the Chiefs sending back a lower-round pick or two.

I don’t think Kansas City even bothered making a counter-offer because they really wanted to keep Dorsey. They were pretty lucky to get him with the fifth pick.

That all being said, I think the Saints were thrilled to get Ellis since he only cost them a third-round pick. They had him graded pretty close with Dorsey, and their main goal in this draft was to wind up with one of the two. … They probably sent a gift basket to the Rams and Falcons for passing on Dorsey and allowing that to happen.

[Comment From J. STEWJ. STEW: ]
Does Stincomp get replaced at right tackle?
Wednesday April 30, 2008 12:34 J. STEW
12:34
JIMMY SMITH: Don't expect Jon Stinchcomb to be moved out at right tackle, J.STEW. Not now. As a whole, the offensive line was among the most efficient in pass protection last year, keeping Drew Brees upright most of the time. Stinchcomb, I believe is safe. Jammal Brown, though, might be another question. The Saints like what Zach Strief can do and good left tackles can bring good value on the market. The rumor that Brown was being offered around last week made some sense, despite the denials by the Saints.

Is Meachem healthy? What do you think we could expect out of him?
Wednesday April 30, 2008 12:36 Ray
12:38

MIKE TRIPLETT: Hey Ray, these guys haven’t been on the field yet. We’ll get our first look at them in a couple weeks when they start their OTAs. But all reports on Meachem have been pretty glowing so far. And I’m personally impressed with his attitude and his decision to seek out veteran David Patten as a workout mentor this offseason. Patten is one of the hardest workers in the game.

Meachem was picked in the first round last year for a reason, so there’s definitely some real talent there. Confidence (and health) will be the big issues. But I can definitely see him winning that No. 3 receiver job this year.

12:38
[Comment From LeVarLeVar: ]
With the depth at wide receiver we have, who is the odd man out if arrington makes the team? Moore...Copper?
Wednesday April 30, 2008 12:38 LeVar
12:38
JIMMY SMITH: That's an excellent question, LeVar. The Saints placed all of their confidence in Lance Moore as a return man last year, and came up wanting in some respects. Terrance Copper is a solid contributor on special teams and can catch the ball in traffic. Moore also is pretty sure-handed. That will be an interesting competition in training camp because Robert Meachem is expected to be a contributor this year instead of just a spectator. That battle will be one of the most intense this summer.

i heard you mention that you expect big things from Vilma this year. Do you have any insight to his recovery fromt the knee injury? Was it made out to be worse than it was? From what i read, it seemed real minor. I hope this is the year the Dome Patrol returns.
Wednesday April 30, 2008 12:40 Jeremy in Nashville
12:42

MIKE TRIPLETT: Hey Jeremy, we should find out more about Vilma – and Morgan, for that matter – once the OTAs start. … His health is definitely a concern. He had an unusual knee surgery – grafting a piece of bone from another part of his body to replace a piece of dead bone in his knee. Of course there could be complications. But the injury itself is an issue he’s been playing through for a long time, so the Saints are optimistic.

My outlook on him is, of course, assuming he’s healthy. He could be the defense’s version of Drew Brees two years ago.

Wednesday April 30, 2008 12:42 John
12:42
JIMMY SMITH:   That did seem to be a nice choice at the time, John. Pressley seems to be an impressive speciman and the way the Saints rotate their defensive linemen, if he's able to stick around, he should see some playing time.

Wednesday April 30, 2008 12:44 Andrew A.
12:44
JIMMY SMITH: The Saints have several options there right now, Andrew A. There's Matt Lehr who was signed in free-agency. Jamar Nesbit has played the position before, and he's a possibility. Those are the two that immediately come to mind.

Gents, we look forward to seeing you in London in October for the SD game. What is your view on the kicker position following the drafting of Mehlhaff to go up against Grammatica?
Wednesday April 30, 2008 12:44 LondonSaint
12:45

MIKE TRIPLETT: I wouldn’t kick Gramatica out of town just yet. I think the Saints really liked him after his brief audition last December. I just think they’re tired of messing around with that position. They’ve used four different guys over the last two years, and they want some security.

It’s also possible that both guys stick on the roster. Mehlhaff has a big leg and could become a kickoff specialist/long field-goal kicker.

If the Shockey deal is not dead, what would be the final piece of the puzzle to push the deal over the top? What do the Giants want and what is Payton willing to give up
Wednesday April 30, 2008 12:45 saintsfannorth
12:47
JIMMY SMITH: There's always next year's draft, saintsfannorth. The Saints could deal a conditional pick to the Giants depending upon certain parameters that could be met, in addition to a player already on the roster. I've been told, and it has been reported in the New York media that Shockey has told the Giants he wants out. If Payton is as enamored with Shockey as he seems to be, the deal could still be worked out. Shockey is young and talented and could likely prosper in this offensive system.

What are your thoughts on Carl Nicks? I like the pick up!
Wednesday April 30, 2008 12:48 Jason
12:49

MIKE TRIPLETT: Hey Mike, Great Name! Maybe we’re related.

Nicks has the most potential of any of the Saints’ Day 2 draft choices. At one point in January, he was being ranked alongside some of the first-round tackles in this year’s draft class. He’s got some character concerns and some work-ethic concerns, so he’s hardly a sure thing. But he knows he’s on a short leash, so he should be motivated. I wouldn’t expect anything from him this year, but he could develop into a powerful run-blocker, either at right tackle or guard.

Do the saints really have enough money to sign all the draft picks, will smith and colston?
Wednesday April 30, 2008 12:50 Rick
12:50
JIMMY SMITH: Money is just paper, Rick, and even though it seems at times that NFL teams have a license to print their own currency, there are enough creative ways to structure contracts that everyone should be happy. It's going to take some serious cash, though, to get Will Smith's deal done, and Colston has certainly earned a new deal as well. Look for some progress to be made on both these players now that the draft is out of the way. It's important to the Saints' future that Smith get a new deal.

Hey Mike...Enjoyed the golf game with ya yesterday....What are the chances that Duece returns to 2006 form? If he doesnt who is going to be the workhorse or will they employ a rotation of Reggie, PT and Steck?
Wednesday April 30, 2008 12:52 Ross
12:54

MIKE TRIPLETT: Hey Brian and Derrick and Ross, I think the Saints will be OK at running back. I think they had good enough depth last year when Deuce went down. I just think their biggest mistake was that they moved Reggie Bush inside to replace him and dumbed down their offense as a result.

I think Deuce could still be good for 10 to 15 carries a game. But even if he can’t return to form, they could use Aaron Stecker and Pierre Thomas for 10 to 15 carries a game, with Reggie doing a little of everything. I don’t think that’s a weakness at all.

As for the Mehlhaff-Coutu thing, I think they liked the stronger leg.

And as for the golf thing, that was a monster drive on No. 9, Ross. Too bad you missed the eagle putt.

Hey Jimmy. What about picking up a guy like Dominic Rhodes? I think a solid presence like that in the backfield will help to solidify the position. Any thoughts?
Wednesday April 30, 2008 12:57 Patrick
12:57

JIMMY SMITH: Patrick, Rhodes had a heck of a year for the Colts when they won the Super Bowl, but disappeared last year with the Raiders. Certainly there must have been a reason. Having not seen the Raiders that much, I couldn't venture an educated guess. It would be interesting to investigate, though.

Wednesday April 30, 2008 12:57
12:58

MIKE TRIPLETT: Hey Peter, I really do think Smith is very good and very important to the defense. On a defense that desperately needs more disruptive playmakers at just about every position, he’s the guy they can least afford to lose. … If they let him go, how do they replace him? They’d have to make a deal like the one that Minnesota made to get Jarred Allen from Kansas City. They paid him more money than Smith will cost AND they gave up a first-round draft pick. … Not many guys of Smith’s caliber become available in free agency.

Our special teams left something to be desired....Lancd Moore did nothing as a return man. Will Reggie earn more of that fat check and become a full time return man..Kickoffs and punts?
Wednesday April 30, 2008 1:00 LeVar Elder
1:01

MIKE TRIPLETT: Hey LeVar, I think the Saints are thinking like you with Reggie. They want to maximize his potential and maximize their investment on him. I expect to see him returning more punts. … Last year, he was a little dinged-up, and he was too valuable to the offense after Deuce went down.

Tracy Porter could compete for a return-man role, too. Lance Moore is still a decent option, and Pierre Thomas can return kickoffs. … They should be a little better this year.
