Hi, I'm Doug Tatum, sports editor of The Times-Picayune and for the next hour the moderator of this Saints chat with beat reporter Mike Triplett. We'll be going live in one minute.

Thanks for taking time for the Saints fans Mike! Do you see Deuce on the Saints team this year? Also, do you think its possible for the Saints to trade up and take Glenn Dorsey or Sedrick Ellis?
Wednesday April 2, 2008 12:01 Derek,New Orleans
12:02
timespicayune:

MIKE TRIPLETT: Hey Derek, two good questions right off the bat. … I think Deuce will rework his contract a little bit and come to training camp. But he needs to prove he’s healthy in July and August to make the team. The Saints aren’t in a hurry to get rid of him. They love him and are pretty loyal to him. But his knees will ultimately make this decision for them.

As for trading up in the draft, the Saints have proven in the past that they’re willing to move up or down, so I wouldn’t rule it out. It might be hard to get Dorsey, even if they’re willing to give up a No. 1 and a 2. Ellis is more realistic. A lot of people think the Patriots will want to move down at No. 7, and he should still be there.

Personally, I’m no expert, but I haven’t been too impressed by Ellis at the Senior Bowl and combine so far.

[Comment From JackavelliJackavelli: ]
what is the status on new contracts for Colston, Smith, Evans, and Vilma? Do you see any of those guys not being Saints in 2009?
Wednesday April 2, 2008 12:03 Jackavelli
12:03
timespicayune:

MIKE TRIPLETT: I think the Saints will get something done with Smith this offseason, but it might drag out into the summer. They need to pay him more than they paid Charles Grant, but they have a decent amount of money in the bank. Every in the NFL does these days. … They’ll probably work out something with Colston, too, but that’s not as urgent since he’s a restricted free agent. Evans will be back one way or another.

I don’t think they’ll work out a long-term extension with Vilma before this season, but I think he’s gonna be outstanding. Like Drew Brees was a couple years ago. And I think they’ll want to re-sign him next year and he’ll want to stay.

Any truth to the continued rumors that the Saints are trying to acquire Jeremy Shockey? Is Will Smith trade bait, or will he get a new deal?
Wednesday April 2, 2008 12:04 Adam
12:05
timespicayune:
SAINTS WRITER JIMMY SMITH, FROM PALM BEACH: The Shockey scenario seems to be something that just won't go away. Shockey's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, won't comment and neither will the Saints about their interest. Stay tuned, though. If a story is this persistent, there could be some validity to it.
Don't think that Will Smith is trade bait. He's too valuable to a defense that has a shortage of reliable, All-Pro type players. In the end, he should get a renegotiated contract.

[Comment From Todd G.Todd G.: ]
Was the Brunell signing just an indication that Payton wanted someone with signifigant playing experience to mentor and groom the young Palko? I do not believe it's a coincidence that their playing styles are similar and they are both left-handed. Thoughts?
Wednesday April 2, 2008 12:06 Todd G.
12:06
timespicayune:
SAINTS WRITER JIMMY SMITH, FROM PALM BEACH: Regarding Brunell, the Saints have desperately needed a better backup to Drew Brees. The prospect of having to go with Jamie Martin for any length of time in the event of a Brees injury was very disconcerting. Brunell gives a comfort level as a quality, proven back up that Martin could not. And he'll be a mentor for Tyler Palko, as is Brees. It's a coincidence they're both left-handed. But Brunell brings experience to the table and he'll be a better back up than Martin has been.

[Comment From Cedric M.Cedric M.: ]
What's the deal regarding Coach Payton's contract? Isn't this the final year of his deal? I know Benson is probably a little gun shy after getting burned by Haslett, but this is apples and oranges.
Wednesday April 2, 2008 12:07 Cedric M.
12:08
timespicayune:
SAINTS WRITER JIMMY SMITH, FROM PALM BEACH: If the Saints were going to re-do Payton's contract, it would have been easier to do it coming off his first season and an appearance in the NFC Championship game, rather than a 7-9 year. However, don't be surprised if something is done, perhaps after the draft, and possibly a re-shuffling regarding personnel decisions that could give Payton a little more control in that area. As Bill Parcells often said, if you're going to cook the meal, you ought be be able to buy thye groceries.

[Comment From david logrecodavid logreco: ]
Hi Mike, I am in san diego and I am a die hard Saints fan. I keep up with the Saints moves on a daily basis. I keep reading on certain fan sites that people believe our first draft choice could be Mendenhall. What do you think? People may not know but Pierre Thomas went to Illinois and Mendenhall could not unseat him as the starter.

12:10
timespicayune:

MIKE TRIPLETT: Hey, David. I’ve seen the same things, and I just can’t believe it. I wouldn’t be surprised if they draft a tailback at some point, but I don’t think that’s their biggest need, and I don’t think Mendenhall is the best player available at No. 10. … The Saints always stick to that best-player-available principle, though, so don’t rule anyone out.

[Comment From Todd G.Todd G.: ]
Since it appears that Bush is going to spend the entire offseason at the team training facility instead of California, how much of an impact do you think that will have on his play this season as opposed to last?
Wednesday April 2, 2008 12:10 Todd G.
12:10
timespicayune:
MIKE TRIPLETT: I expect big things from Bush this year, Todd. Of course, I said the same thing last year. But this guy really is a special talent. Remember how good he was over the last two months in 2007? The coaches just need to figure out the best way to use him, and Bush probably needed that humbling experience from last year. Plus, he needs to stay healthy. He was dinged up during each of the last two seasons, which might always be an issue since he’s a smaller back.

[Comment From Cedric MCedric M: ]
The Saints re-signed Copper, Patten, and Henderson this off-season. Why didn't they bring in some new receivers? Those guys dropped their fair share of balls. Speaking of receivers, any news on the Colston contract front?
Wednesday April 2, 2008 12:12 Cedric M
12:12
timespicayune:
MIKE TRIPLETT: Hey Cedric, don’t forget about Robert Meachem, too. … I think the Saints will be fine at receiver. I didn’t see anyone in free agency after Randy Moss that would have been a huge upgrade. The Saints love David Patten as their veteran No. 2 guy. Henderson and Meachem should compete for that No. 3 spot. And Moore and Copper are solid backups/special teams guys.

[Comment From Todd G.Todd G.: ]
Do you think Randall Gay's production in New England are just a product of their defensive system and philosophy, or will he make any signifigant contributions here?
Wednesday April 2, 2008 12:14 Todd G.
12:14
timespicayune:
MIKE TRIPLETT: Hey Todd, I’m gonna have to defer to the Saints’ scouting department on this one. They targeted Gay from the very start of free agency and signed him on that first weekend. They didn’t want Asante Samuel (at his price tag, anyway), and they didn’t want Drayton Florence. So they must think he’ll be a good fit in this defense. Gay doesn’t have a very lengthy track record in the NFL, but if the Patriots trusted him, I guess the Saints can too.

Do you think I could get some over the top help this year? Does Bullocks have the FS job locked down or will they give Kaesviharn a legit shot to win? Everytime he stepped on the field last year he made plays.
Wednesday April 2, 2008 12:16 Jason D.
12:16
timespicayune:
MIKE TRIPLETT: The Saints are trying, Jason. They already signed Randall Gay, and I bet they get another cornerback early in the draft. … But you should be better in your second year with this system, too, right? … I think we’ll be talking about that Kaesviharn/Bullocks battle well into training camp. Maybe they’ll be competing with a new draft pick, too.

Wednesday April 2, 2008 12:17 Cedric M.
12:18
timespicayune:
MIKE TRIPLETT: The Saints go into super-secret mode this time of year, so I can’t say what they’re thinking. But I do know that they love those super-athletic upside type guys, so I think these will both be at the top of their list above all the other corners.

12:19
timespicayune:
MIKE TRIPLETT: Can’t make up my mind on Rivers. I’ve gotta do my first mock draft for Sunday, and I think I’m leaning toward one of those cornerbacks we just talked about. Rivers makes a lot of sense, though, especially since he was recruited to USC by new Saints d-line coach Ed Orgeron.

how do you feel about the saints linebackers? wouldnt the addition of keith rivers (assuming he is available) give us 3 solid linebackers to go along with vilma & fujita?
Wednesday April 2, 2008 12:20 james
12:21
timespicayune:
MIKE TRIPLETT: Hey James, we were just talking about that. … I think Rivers would be a great fit on this defense – an active, athletic playmaking type at weakside linebacker. They do have Scott Shanle and Dan Morgan already in the fold, but if they think Rivers is the best player available, that won’t stop them.

Who do you think the Saints will take with their first pick (No. 10 overall)?
Keith Rivers, USC LB

Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Tennessee St. DB

Leodis McKelvin, Troy DB
 ( 9% )
Sedrick Ellis, USC DT

Jeff - Will the Saints try to trade for Lito Sheppard?

MIKE TRIPLETT: Hey Jeff, I absolutely wouldn’t rule that out. Remember those draft day trades that brought Jeff Faine and Hollis Thomas to town two years ago? Maybe they trade down with Philly at 19 in the first round to get Sheppard … unless of course they trade up to get Ellis.

timespicayune:

KL - looks like the saints primary need in the draft is still at cb, so that probably means jenkins, cromartie, mckelvin, or talib in the 1st. but who are the top dt prospects for the 2nd round? we need a run stuffer who commands double teams to free up vilma, our other lb's, and our de's. who best fits that bill in the 2nd?

MIKE TRIPLETT: One name that stands out to me is Purdue TE Dustin Keller. The Saints have a few tie-ins with Purdue, and that’s a position Payton has been trying to fill since he got here.

timespicayune:
JIMMY SMITH, FROM PALM BEACH: Not having spoken yet to Smith's agent, I'm not sure, but it's likely they'll try to hammer out a new deal sometime in the coming weeks, especially if it seems Smith's unhappiness would linger into minicamp time at the end of May or worse, into training camp in July. You could use Grant's contract as a gauge on what he'll be looking for as well as what else has gone on in the free-agent marketplace for players who haven't had the kind of performance Smith has had over his career.

12:05 - do the saints plan to use reggie differently. it feels like the majority of run plays last year started at leaste five yard behind the line of scrimage. he has great hand, but he has to many passes thrown to him as well.

MIKE TRIPLETT: I think that’s one of the top priorities for the coaching staff this offseason, and I think they’ll figure out how to improve it. … I think the whole offense suffered last year when Deuce went down and Reggie got moved into that primary tailback spot. Reggie is more dangerous when defenses have to locate him in different places on the field. He was easy to find when he lined up at tailback.

[Andrew] -  If the season started today, Mike McKenzie would be on the PUP list, and our corners would be Randall Gay and Jason David with Craft/Usama Young as the backups. Given the fact that the Saints pass defense was so victimized last season, and was clearly the achilles heel of the team -- don't you think we should have been more aggressive in upgrading in the offseason? Is Randall Gay really going to be a solution? Don't you think CB is a must in the first round?

[Andrew] -  I cannot understand for the life of me why the Saints haven't addressed the need for an upgrade at free safety. Josh Bullocks was TERRIBLE last year. Do you think the team feels the need to address this in the draft or post draft free agency - or am I going to be subjected to watching this guy miss tackles, bite on play fakes and misread deep balls for another season?

MIKE TRIPLETT: Hey Andrew, I’ll answer both of your questions at once. I do think there will be one or two more defensive backs in the fold after the draft. But I think the biggest concern is improving the entire defense. A better pass rush will help. More athletic linebackers will help. This team needs to get a lot more disruptive so quarterbacks can’t just pick them apart. … Honestly, I don’t think the safeties are that bad, but every defensive back looked terrible last year.
