Hey everyone -- great to have Spring Training underway again! The Indians and Mariners are making lots of headlines these days. Let me know your questions and I'll get to as many as I can within the hour.

[Comment From Tribe fanTribe fan: ]
Do you think the Indians will get a starting pitcher before the season starts? If so, who do you think? It seems to me that with all the money they've been spending, it would be ridiculous not to get a pitcher, 'cause I don't really see them contending without adding one.
Wednesday February 13, 2013 3:01 Tribe fan
3:02
Ben Nicholson-Smith:
I agree that they could still use a starting pitcher. Their rotation looks shaky and doesn't compare with that of the Tigers. I don't get the sense that they're going to add another pitcher, though -- ESPN's Buster Olney has reported they aren't expected to sign Lohse.

Can you see the Cardinals going anything big this year or next
Wednesday February 13, 2013 3:03 Guest

Ben Nicholson-Smith:
I doubt the Cardinals will do all that much before Opening Day (other than a potential Wainwright deal) but next winter I can see them aggressively pursuing shortstops in trades.

Do you think GM's ever withhold consummating agreed-upon trades until after season-ticket sales season?
Wednesday February 13, 2013 3:04 Frank

I doubt it. It'd be tough to persuade the other GM to wait in that scenario.

Where do you see Shawn Kelley and Mike Carp ending up?
Wednesday February 13, 2013 3:05 Ms Fan
3:06
Ben Nicholson-Smith:
I can see the Red Sox landing Carp based on the report from the Boston Globe that they've considered him internally. As for Kelley, it could be any number of teams. I do think he'll be traded or claimed though.

Who will I sign with this season? Will it happen soon?
Wednesday February 13, 2013 3:06 Kyle Lohse
3:07
Ben Nicholson-Smith:
There's no guarantee Lohse will sign soon, but I do expect he'll sign. There are enough teams that could use pitching that he'll draw decent interest, even while attached to draft pick compensation. I can see the Brewers, Nationals, Indians, Orioles, Rangers or Angels getting involved. At this point none of those clubs seem likely though.

How would you rate the deal I just pulled off with the Indians?
Wednesday February 13, 2013 3:08 Scott Boras/Michael Bourn
3:10
Ben Nicholson-Smith:
I think Bourn and Boras did fine. The $48MM guarantee is substantial and it's tough to generate a market for players with such limited power. That said many ranked Bourn above Upton ($75MM) entering the offseason, so it's far from a coup for Boras.

Why have the Orioles not garnered more criticism? Career years out of numerous players and an almost impossible to duplicate record in 1-run games, shouldn't they have jumped at adding whoever they could before they revert back to form?
Wednesday February 13, 2013 3:16 Chris
3:17
Ben Nicholson-Smith:
I think the Orioles should have done more. This team has issues in the rotation and as you point out it'd be unreasonable to expect similar dominance from the bullpen. I also acknowledge that they have more information on their team than anyone and have made some shrewd decisions in the last year-plus.

What do you think of Samardzija reportedly turning down an extension, pretty risky right?
Wednesday February 13, 2013 3:19 Matt S
3:20
Ben Nicholson-Smith:
For most players I would say yes. But Samardzija signed a $10MM deal out of the draft and earned $2.64MM for 2012 and 2013. He already has his first fortune and I understand holding out to see if an even bigger one is possible in a couple of years.

Do you think the Mets were used in the Bourn deal? Seems that way to me. Especially since all reports indicated that nobody had asked mlb or an arbitrator to rule on the draft pick issue.
Wednesday February 13, 2013 3:23 Terry Harmon
3:24
Ben Nicholson-Smith:
Not at all. The Mets want it known that they were involved in pursuit of Bourn. It suggests to the fan base that they're acting like a big market club and intent on making improvements. If the Mets were 'used' they wouldn't be tweeting about their failed pursuit of Bourn in my view.

With a lot of discussion over baseball's first 200 million dollar pitcher, is there anyone in baseball today who you see as baseball's first 300 million dollar player? (Trout?)
Wednesday February 13, 2013 3:31 Harthan
3:31

I disagree with you there. I like both deals since they're relatively low risk moves. Plus the third base market was thin and there's reason to believe Berkman can mash if healthy.

I like the new CBA. I think the MLBPA and MLB ironed out some quirks that didn't need to be there (Elias rankings, Type A/B free agents) while making some positive big picture changes (second Wild Card team, 15 teams per league) and keeping the strong financial structure of the game in place.
