MLBTR Chat

Ben Nicholson-Smith:
Hey everyone. How about that trade? Lots to break down between the Blue Jays and Marlins. That'll be the focus of today's chat, but there's tons more to discuss. I was at the GM Meetings last week, so send any related questions over. Plus there's non-Marlins news with Hunter signing and other players drawing interest.

I expect the Yankees will look for more of a sure thing. Plus some teams view Morrison as a first baseman rather than an outfielder.

Thoughts on Torii signing
Wednesday November 14, 2012 3:03 Aaron
3:04
Ben Nicholson-Smith:
I like this deal for Hunter -- I don't think he was going to do any better at age 37. And I like it for the Tigers. They overpaid a little in my view, but that's common so early in the offseason. They got the player they wanted and he's a good one, even if he's probably not a five win guy going forward.

Wednesday November 14, 2012 3:04 Chad

Well salary relief to start. Nolasco didn't have a great year last year so I can see one a package centered around one good but not necessarily great MLB-ready player being enough.

They have interest and he could be a fit for them. Youkilis should have lots of choice if he's willing to take a one-year deal. If he insists on multiple years the list of suitors could diminish quickly.

What was your reaction on the blockbuster tradE?
Wednesday November 14, 2012 3:06 BPJPll
3:09
Ben Nicholson-Smith:
It makes the Marlins look bad -- they're going back to their old ways after convincing Miami taxpayers to spend on their stadium. From a baseball standpoint I can understand wanting to get out from under the contracts of Buehrle and Buck.

It makes the Blue Jays look like a contender. Their rotation looks much, much better now, even if Buehrle's numbers take a hit in the AL East. As for Reyes, he's a major upgrade for Toronto, which clears troublemaker Yunel Escobar out of town at the same time. Bonifacio should be useful.

Wednesday November 14, 2012 3:09 pat m

Ben Nicholson-Smith:
As I said before it's not a total heist from a baseball standpoint since the Marlins do get young talent in return. So you can make the case that the Marlins will benefit on the field in a few years. I'd rather have the group including Johnson and Reyes, but others might disagree.

There are legitimate questions about Loria's impact on the game. If I were an owner I would want him out.

Wednesday November 14, 2012 3:11 Chris
3:12
Ben Nicholson-Smith:
I think Hamilton, Swisher, Cody Ross, Victorino, Bourn and Upton make sense. It'll come down to prices to an extent but they are in good shape since the free agent market is deep in the outfield. They could also try to trade for Justin Upton or Choo.

I think it's a really good question. Longtime MLBTR writer Luke Adams pointed out to me that the Marlins are sending approximately enough cash to cover Buck's salary. In other words, if the Blue Jays didn't want Buck, they could have said no to him and the accompanying salary relief. I expect Toronto to trade Buck or Arencibia this winter.

Wednesday November 14, 2012 3:26 Joe
3:27
Ben Nicholson-Smith:
In part it's positioning, I'm sure. The Cardinals would like to do better at SS, and I'm sure they'll continue considering alternatives. But it wouldn't be the end of the world to start the season with Furcal and Kozma at short. You don't need an All-Star at every position.

Everything. I'm not even kidding when I say that. They have so many needs (could upgrade at every position but third base) and lots of assets. So whether it's trade or free agents, pitchers or position players, the Rays are likely considering it. Once an initial move is made, they'll narrow their focus.
