Post-Oscars Live Chat

Eyder Peralta
- Hi, everyone, and happy Monday.
Linda Holmes
and
Bob Mondello
are doing their finger-warmup exercises; they'll be with us in a minute. Meanwhile, feel free to go ahead and submit your Oscar questions and comments.
We'll be off to the races at 10 a.m.
9:59
LindaHolmes
- Welcome to the Oscar chat! I'm here with critic Bob Mondello. Welcome, Bob, to what I understand is not your favorite part of the year.
9:59
Bob Mondello
-
Oh, no....this is definitely my favorite part...our long national nightmare is finally OVER!
9:59
LindaHolmes
- So last night is not your favorite, but today is.
10:01
Bob Mondello
- As long as we're finally done...now I can worry about important things like why Reese Witherspoon was wearing eye makeup that made her look like a raccoon.
10:01
LindaHolmes
- So was Sarah Jessica Parker! Okay, a question.

[Comment From Traci37643]
Were there any upsets? Who got robbed?
10:01
LindaHolmes
- I would say Waltz With Bashir not winning Best Foreign Language Film was the only real upset. Bob?
10:02
LindaHolmes
- (We're solving a Bob tech issue.)
10:03
LindaHolmes
- Bob reports that he agrees! Whew. Anyhoo, another question.

[Comment From Erica]
Last night's liveblogging was critical of the big multi-presenter actors/actresses format. It seemed like it would've been a nice "Welcome to the winners' club" for Hathaway or Rourke, if they'd won. Any bets on whether they'll try it again next year?
10:03
LindaHolmes
- I don't think they'll try that particular thing again, no. It was really awfully earnest.
10:04
LindaHolmes
- As we said on the liveblog, it had a weird feeling like a eulogy or a wedding toast.
10:04
[Comment From Dale Gardner]
There was an effort to improve the quality/interest of the program itself. Did they succeed or fail?
10:05
LindaHolmes
- I think at first, it was improving. Jackman was good, and the opening was pretty good. But they pushed Supporting Actor way back to hold the Ledger stuff, and the result was a long lag.
10:05
LindaHolmes
- I will tell you that Bob generally does not like the Oscars, so once his keyboard resumes operation, I'm pretty sure he will not argue that they were suddenly fabulous.
10:05
Bob Mondello, NPR
- sorry folks....mouse on the run or something. I was surprised Viola Davis didn't get Sup. Actress. She was pretty stellar.
10:05
[Comment From Amy]
But what about Penelope Cruz? That category was Viola Davis' to lose!
10:06
LindaHolmes
- I think Cruz went in as the favorite, so that didn't surprise me.

[Comment From jlr]
why are the oscars always dominated by just a few films? when was the last time we saw many many films nominated in just one or two categories each?
