Texans chat with John McClain

11:30
John McClain -  Before we start the chat, I want to tell you about a couple of things. First, the Edmonton Eskimos of the CFL are having an open tryout at Rice Stadium on Saturday. Registration is $100 and you have to be there at 9. For more information, go to their website. I don't have it, but I'm sure you can figure it out.

Second, if you 're a high school offensive or defensive lineman and you want some big-time instruction on playing in the defensive or offensive line, former NFL linemen Santana Dotson and Sean Jones will be among those providing the instructions during a two-day clinic on May 30-31 at the University of Houston. I'll have more details about this clinic in my upcoming blogs. If you want more information, e-mail my blog or my chron.com e-mail.

By the way, next Tuesday I'll be at the NFL meetings in California. We're going to move up this chat to 10 a.m. to noon. Thanks. Now, let's get on with the show.

So John anything new on visiting freeagents? i haven't heard anything on anyone in about 2 weeks, are we done or are we waiting till after the draft.
11:31
John McClain -  They'll sign some more before the draft and more after the draft. They're focused on the draft right now. Rick Smith just got back from a week-long meeting with the competition committee. That committee, the most powerful in the NFL, meets every year before the regular spring meetings, which begin Sunday.

John....Conceivably an ideal situation for the Texans would be trading down to the Jets, Bucs, or Vikings for a third round choice and still being inn position to draft Cushing or Matthews...Is this a realistic scenario?
11:31
John McClain -  I think that would be great. By the way, they would pick Matthews over Cushing.
11:32
[Comment From KD]
Good morning John. Do you see any more FA visits and/ or signings before the draft by the Texans?
11:32
John McClain -  Yes.

[Comment From raggs]
any truth to the schaub for denvers qb
11:32
John McClain -  No. The Texans love Schaub and aren't interested in trading him.
11:33
John McClain -  By the way, as much as we like to speculate on Jay Cutler coming to Houston, it's not going to happen. Gary Kubiak loves Schaub and says Schaub is his guy.

[Comment From alkren in ATX]
What do you think about Darius Butler as our 2nd round pick at CB?
11:34
John McClain -  I don't think he'll be there when the Texans pick in the second round. I also don't think theyre going to draft a CB in the second round, but I could be wrong.
11:34
[Comment From Andy G]
John...any chance my Titans are looking to sign a WR before the draft? I still have a hard time seeing them taking a WR in Round 1.
11:35
John McClain -  Receiver is the Texans' best and strongest position, and I count Owen Daniels in there with Johnson and Walter because he catches like a wideout.

Hey john, what kinds of defensive tackles do you think the texans will persue either in the draft or free agency? A big space eater (BJ raji) or a smaller penetrator (piera jerry). Thanks
11:36
John McClain -  If they could get Raji, they'd be all over him. He's 330. Ideally, you don't want both tackles the same size. Okoye and Jerry are the same size. I think they'll sign a free agent DT and draft a DT in the first or second round.
11:36
[Comment From Jim]
John, why do you think the Texans won't draft a safety in round 2, given needs at SS and FS? Delmas, Moore, or Chung would make sense.
11:37
John McClain -  Because they like FS Eugene Wilson -- they just gave him a three-year contract -- and SS Dominique Barber. They have Ferguson and Harrison for depth. They'll sign some more safeties. I think they'll draft one in the third or fourth round.
11:37
[Comment From VeEzy]
should the texans get Dwayne Jarrett From Carolina for a 4th Round Pick
11:38
John McClain -  Why in the world would they do that? Why trade a 4 for a guy who'd be a backup at best?
