4A playoffs: Blackfoot at Century

First, let's go through a quick primer on what to expect from the live blog. I'll write updates throughout the game for big plays and scoring. I can't do play-by-play, watch the game and keep stats at the same time. But the beautiful function of the live blog is it lets you interact. You can ask me, or the audience, at any time, offer an insight or just root for your team. Just write in the box below, it will show up to me and after the first time, you'll be allowed to post instantly. Get it? Got it? Good?

Let's update a couple scores while we're at it.

Hillcrest leads Minico 39-0 in the third quarter. You can follow the live blog for that game here.

Here at Holt Arena, Pocatello leads 28-26 with 2:47 left in the fourth quarter. Pocatello has the ball at the Jerome 15-yard line and is looking to seal up a win and a trip to Hillcrest next week.

Now to the game at hand. Here’s the capsule in Thursday’s paper we published to preview this game. You can see the rest of our capsules here.

No. 2 Blackfoot (7-1) vs. No. 5 Century (5-3)

When: 8:45 p.m. Friday at Holt Arena

What to know:
Blackfoot beat Century 20-15 on Oct. 1. But thanks to Idaho’s predetermined brackets, Blackfoot will travel to Holt Arena for the first round of the playoffs. In fact, the state’s No. 2 team will remain on the road throughout the playoffs unless Burley upsets Twin Falls and then District 3’s third-place team to meet Blackfoot in the semifinals.

“We’re going to have to do it on the road,” Blackfoot coach Stan Buck said. “But I told the kids we’re a good team. We just have to do it the hard way.”

In the previous meeting with Century, Blackfoot receiver Julio Flores had one of his trademark big days, catching five passes for 120 yards and a touchdown. But Century limited quarterback Anthony Clarke, intercepting him twice and holding him under 100 yards rushing.

As I’m sure you all know, Blackfoot and Century played earlier this season, in Blackfoot, with Blackfoot winning 20-15. Here’s our story from that game.

The big story from the game was, according to our sports editor Jeff Pinkham, that Blackfoot let Century hang around in the game. They were the better team but just never had the killer instinct. A repeat of that won’t fly tonight.

But you have to go back and look at the bobbled snap Century had with 1st-and-goal from the 1-yard line that Blackfoot’s Nate Walker recovered. It’s easy to play a game of what-if with that.
8:33
I picked Blackfoot 35-20 in my picks column today because even though it shouldn’t have to play in the dome, the turf should only help its speed and Blackfoot is a team built on speed.

Century was able to keep Blackfoot QB Anthony Clarke from breaking any big runs in the previous meeting. On this fast track, I bet he at least breaks one.
8:33
For those of you unfamiliar with Century, here’s their season resume.

Record: 5-3
Knocked Pocatello off the District 5 throne

Game-by-game

W 52-6 vs. Burley
W 48-25 vs. Madison
L 24-9 vs. Highland
W 14-0 at Twin Falls
L 20-15 at Blackfoot
W 29-0 at Preston
L 34-6 vs. Hillcrest
W 41-13 vs. Pocatello

Points scored per game: 26.75
Points allowed per game: 15.25

Player to watch:
QB Michael Semons. I was impressed with him against Hillcrest last season in the playoffs and the senior has only had another season to mature.
8:34
And here’s Blackfoot’s resume

Record: 7-1
Second-place finish in 4A District 6 after losing at Hillcrest 26-24 last week.

Game-by-game

W 37-6 vs. Madison
W 42-13 at Idaho Falls
W 29-14 vs. Pocatello
W 21-0 at Rigby
W 20-15 vs. Century
W 42-28 vs. Bonneville
W 43-42 at Skyline
L 26-24 at Hillcrest

Points scored per game: 32.25
Points allowed per game: 18

Players to watch:

QB Anthony Clarke
– The senior is third in the area in rushing (124 carries, 1,045 yard, 12 TD, 8.4 YPC) but holds a 74.6 QB rating (61-for-123, 1,042 yards, 6 TD, 6 INT). If he can make good decisions throwing, Blackfoot is tough to beat.

WR/DB Julio Flores
– Before the season, I thought Salmon’s Riley Sessions was the best receiver in eastern Idaho, hands down. Then I saw this kid. He’s got such a big body (6-foot-2, 200 pounds) that he can run over DBs and he uses it deftly to shield away defenders. But his biggest weapon in this offense is his jump-ball ability. He catches balls he has no business even getting a hand on.

While he leads the area with 35 receptions and 729 yards, he’s never caught more than five passes in a game. Clarke looked for him 10+ times against Hillcrest, so we could see his catches sky rocket if he gets some catch-able balls.

LB Garrett Buck – We don’t get defensive stats from Blackfoot, but he had at least 13 tackles last week against Hillcrest. Me and my editor were both amazed as he came off every pile. If we had his stats, he would be at least one of the area leaders

SCORING UPDATE: Pocatello 35, Jerome 26 with 1:28 left.
