KristaRichmond -  Welcome everyone! We'll begin in just a moment.
4:59
Rob Trawick -  Hello Krista

5:00
KristaRichmond -  Hello, Rob!
5:01
KristaRichmond -  So, first off, tell us a little about what we should be doing with our gardens in November.
5:03
Rob Trawick -  Well, I'll start off with landscaping: Now is the time to take on those jobs of planting trees and shrubs that people often put off until spring or summer. You will often hear horticulturist's say 'fall is for planting' and it is for a very good reason, planting now give the roots time to establish themselves because the ground stays warm so that when the heat in spring and summer starts the top will be on the same level as the roots and you won't have a tree or shrub that deals with transplant shock near as much.
5:05
Rob Trawick -  In your vegetable garden you should be looking at putting in plants that we grow in the fall and winter; strawberries, allium crops like onions, leeks, etc, cabbage and other cole crops....these are all the crops that we should concentrate on in winter
5:06
Rob Trawick -  If you like annuals now is the time to plant them too....go for cool season annuals like snapdragons, pansy's, dianthus, etc.
5:07
KristaRichmond -  Good advice! What about watering? Should we change the amount or frequency?
5:12
Rob Trawick -  That's a great question....because of the fact that we aren't in the yard as much and because the temperatures aren't as high (therefore transpiration of water isn't as high) we don't think about watering as much in the fall and winter but it is still a necessary item that plants have to have. Frequency and amount will drop some from the spring and summer..but as a general rule, if we haven't had an inch of rain in the past seven days you will want to consider adding supplemental water. Most of the time we don't need to water as much in the winter because mother nature does a pretty good job of making sure we have enough through rain but keep an eye on those rain gagues
5:14
Rob Trawick -  Don't get your gardening instincts from Walmart.....they fill up the lawn and garden center at this time of the year with holiday items and clear out the lawn and garden material when they really should be stocking up on it more than at any other time of the year
