MY PI: Editorial Board (Nov. 4)

12:58
Dale McConnaughay -  Welcome, everyone. We'll get started here in just a few minutes here with today's online editorial board discussion.
1:01
Dale McConnaughay -  Okay, let's get started and hope we will get some company
1:02
Dale McConnaughay -  Following Tuesday election results, notably in Virginia, New Jersey and New York 23. Will it be a referendum benefitting national Democrats and the Obama administration, a rejection of same or, most likely, something of a wash for which both sides will spin as they see fit? Wait and see …

[Comment From LEG]
Off-year elections are notoriously hard to use to divine national trends, but having won two governorships I think I’m willing to let the Republicans spin this as they like.
1:03
Dale McConnaughay -  Well, both sides will spin of course. But for the president's men to now act as though he was disinterested, watching Bulls game and all that, is a tad disingenous given his trips to both states -- agree?
1:05
Dale McConnaughay -  And we are left to wonder if he would have been watching that game had Democrats prevailed in both states ...
1:06
[Comment From LEG]
I don't know. I didn't follow the elections carefully either last night. You are right that the White House would be a little happier if the Democrats had won.
1:07
Dale McConnaughay -

Still, Tuesday's results were in keeping with the party anti-incumbency trend of  mid-term or off-year  elections

1:09
[Comment From LEG]
I'm trying to think of all the other races to see if incumbents lost in general. Not sure that is true, but that slant might tell us more than "a rejection of Obama".
1:09
Dale McConnaughay -

What did you think of New York 23 where the Democrat won for the first time in a century?

1:11
[Comment From LEG]
I was surprised. Even with the Republican bowing out, for a district that "always" goes Republican I thought the Conservative would win it. I guess the Republicans in New York aren't quite that conservative. (And the Conservative candidate showed no knowledge of the district. He was only interested in national issues.)
1:12
Dale McConnaughay -

Good points -- I think there was some warning in that vote for the party's far-right idealogues ...

1:12
[Comment From Adam Bloom]
I thought your coverage of the proposal 9 issue was clearly biased. More left wing drivel.
1:12
[Comment From LEG]
I haven't heard what the nationally known far-righties (sorry) said about the results. I'm not sure what lesson they will learn.
1:13
Dale McConnaughay -  Adam -- can you elaborate?
1:13
[Comment From LEG]
(and start by telling me what issue 9 was)
1:14
[Comment From Adam Bloom]
The demonification of proposal 9 supporters, first of all, we can start with that.
1:14
Dale McConnaughay -

okay, please refresh us on Issue 9 -- assume this was an Ohio proposition?
