Fred Barbash-Moderator -  Barack Obama: Pragmatist or Ideologue?

That is the question today for our weekly POLITICO-New America Foundation livechat. The guest is the brilliant Andres Martinez, of NAF and I honestly don't know how he'll answer this question.

Andres will be with us at noon. We invite you to submit questions now. Please give a name rather than a handle.

Fred Barbash-Moderator -  Welcome Andres. Thanks for being here. And thanks to all our readers. Please come on in with your questions.

Let me begin Andres by asking you to answer the question you raise. Barack Obama: pragmatist or ideologue?

Thank you, Fred. You are doing great things with Arena. As to our topic of the day, I don't mean to pull an Obama, but I have a bit of a nuanced answer. The president is clearly a pragmatist, not an ideologue. But he is also an idealist, which confuses matters a bit.

Fred Barbash-Moderator -  Too nuanced. Can you elaborate a bit?

[Comment From Andres Martinez]
Obama is no ideologue in that he has no dogmatic approach to policy, much to the disappointment of some of his strongest supporters. He is first and foremost a practical lawyer, the nation's mediator-in-chief. The idealism stems from his biography and his ability, and intense desire, to bridge communities and differences. He proclaimed in his inaugural that the time had come to end petty grievances, recriminations and "worn-out dogmas that for too long have strangled our politics..." and to set aside childish things. That is what he is about. the tragedy is that the parties in this case don't want to do that. They don't want to be in mediation.
