Global Connections in the Primary Classroom

Maria Knee, Kathy Cassidy, and Amanda-lee Marrinan

12:33
Opening with video from the 3 different classrooms. First Maria Knee's kindergarteners in New Hampshire.
12:36
We are seeing the kids in the classroom, reading, writing, working with math manipulatives, the interactive white board, and more.
12:36
Now on to Amanda-lee Marrinan's year 2 classroom in Brisbane, Australia.
12:36
We're getting to see the kids at work in their classroom, reading, working with math manipulatives, on the interactive white board, building with blocks, writing, and more.
12:37
The students are showing off their classroom and explaining the different areas.
12:40
The confidence and joy from these students is exciting to see. This is clearly THEIR classroom.
12:41
Now we get to see Kathy Cassidy's first grade classroom in Moose Jaw, Canada.
12:44

These three classrooms have worked together this year and had the power of learning across time zones and boundaries.

12:46
The 2Gems in Australia are the same year as the first graders in Canada.
12:47

Kathy – Kids are using technology all the time. We can’t have school being the only place they don’t have it. If they write on paper only I get to see it. If they write on their blog people around the world can see it and comment on it.

12:47

Kathy – We wrote about volcanos and what we were learning on the blog and a class of 5 and 6 year olds in NZ wrote a comment that they have a volcano near their classroom. The kids were thrilled to be learning from other kids.

12:49
Maria - Everything is exciting to 5 year olds. They look at Google Earth to find the various places and they are amazed.
12:49
Amanda and Maria's classes learned about tapping trees for maple syrup. Maria's students made a VoiceThread about it and Amanda's kids were thrilled to learn and confirm what they had thought.
12:49
Amada - people are always saying that these kids are too young to do this.
12:50
She found that it actually inspires kids as well as offering them a wider audience.
12:52
Amanda was without connectivity for a term. It was one of many challenges faced.
12:52
Maria - the challenges are the same with primary students everywhere. We're just using these tools to address the challenges.
12:53
Question: What about keeping these little people safe online?
12:56

Maria – compares keeping kids safe online to keeping them safe everywhere else
