Texans chat with John McClain

11:31
John McClain -  Gang, Ms. Sharpe is pulling night duty, so moderating today is Luis Perez, a Vikings fan who left the Chronicle's news side for Chron.com because he likes the frenzied action of sports. Today, he's fired up about getting Sage Rosenfels.

Give me two minutes to start, please. Thanks.

John, is it true that the relationship between Sage and Kubiak had become very strained? What info do you have on that and do you think it played a role in this trade?
11:33
John McClain -  It's not true. They have a good relationship. Sage asked Kubiak to quit yelling at him at one point last season. Kubiak yells at all the quarterbacks and most of his players. Sage told him that wasn't the best way to get the best out of him, so Kubiak stopped yelling at him. I like the trade if they get a player like Owen Daniels in the fourth round and a veteran QB who can win a couple of games if Schaub gets hurt again. Sage's contract would have expired, and they would have lost him for nothing after next season.

What did u take out of Robert Ayers workout where do u see him in the draft ?
11:35
John McClain -  I was very impressed. So were scouts and coaches. He weighed 272 and played RDE last season. He showed up at 280 -- muscle -- to show 3-4 teams he's big enough to play either end in their system. He told 4-3 teams he'll drop back down to 270 if that's necessary. His stock is rising. Now everyone wants to know why he starred only last season.

John, Jacoby Jones... what do you know and do you have an idea of what kind of value they hope/expect to get out of him... a 5th?
11:36
John McClain -  I heard they were trying to trade him, but I can't confirm it. It would be a low pick because when teams look at him, most of what they'll see are punt returns -- touchdowns and fumbles.

[Comment From Chris in Lumberton]
John now that the Texans are going to let Weaver go do you think the Texans will move up to get the DE that they want or stand pat.
11:37
John McClain -  There's no LDE worth moving up for. I think they're going to take an LB in the first round because there's better value. If they solve the LDE or OLB need in free agency, that'll change what they do in the first round.

Who are some potential 1st round picks that the Texans have interviewed at the combine?
11:39
John McClain -  I don't know them all but every DE, LB, CB, FS, RB and OL who can provide depth. They talked to 60. They don't disclose the list. I asked the players, and players who play positions they need said they were scheduled to talk to them.
11:40
John McClain -  I forgot. They talked to all the top DTs, too.

[Comment From Josh Creech]
General, Hope you enjoying that cold weather in Indy! What are your thoughts on Conner Barwin, the newly converted D-End from Cincinatti, who had an incredible combine, and is it possible the Texans might look for a player like him in later rounds?
11:41
John McClain -  He had a fabulous workout. He also had fabulous interview sessions. The problem is his position. Somebody will take him earlier than he expects because he's got so much athleticism. I don't think he'll last until the rounds the Texans could afford to take him, but I might be wrong.

[Comment From Dee]
Did James Casey hurt or helped him self at the combine? What round do you think he will go in?
11:43
John McClain -  Gil Brandt told scouts going in Casey was the best athlete at the combine. He lifted great, caught the ball very well, knocked them out in his intervew sessions, etc. He ran in the 4.7s, which is what the scouts expected him to. He thought he could run in the 4.6s. He'll get another chance at Rice's pro day. He's still going in the second round, according to every scout and coach I talk to.

[Comment From #1 Texans Fan]
Hey John, it looks like Antoine Smith will be hitting the market, any chance of the Texan's being interested in going after him? Also, who do they have in mind to replace Sage?
11:45
John McClain -  Do you mean Arizona DE Antonio Smith? He's a 280-pounder who plays over the tight end. Do you know any teams that need a player like that in free agency? Well, many do, and I'm sure the Texans are one of them. It'll be very interesting. I spoke with a Cardinals insider. He said they want him back, but to re-sign him will cost more than Darnell Dockett wants. Dockett is trying to renegotiate a contract with three years remaining. They have to let Smith go. As for the QB, I listed five in my story today I think they're interested in -- Dan Orlovsky, Rex Grossman, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Jeff Garcia and Patrick Ramsey.
