Crappy Hour with Alex Pareene, July 7, 2009

8:44
Megan -  Alex, it's pretty clear to me that The Media is missing the big story right now... which is that Al Franken's being sworn in today and the Democrats are about to have a filibuster-proof majority. Except for the metaphor, who the fuck cares that the soon-to-be former Alaskan governor Sarah Palin went fishing?
8:47
Pareene -  EVERY NETWORK cares that she went fishing. Senator Franken made a point of very specifically saying his first day was "not a circus" and "not funny at all," apparently, which certainly doesn't invite the same coverage as the soon-to-be-former governor of Alaska in waders, which make anyone look hilarious.
8:48
Pareene -  I do love that Al's wife found a place on Craigslist, though, that they haven't yet seen.
8:49
Megan -  He really needs to get the blonde wig back for people to like him. http://www.tvacres.com/images/word_stuart.jpg
I mean, who doesn't want him as one's Senator?
8:54
Pareene -  Having your wife find a placeon Craigslist is certainlly a far cry from "sleeping rent-free in a fundraiser's basement." Thought maybe that's not a fair comparison, because Franken has all that Air America money and the royalties from Stuart Saves His Family roll in like clockwork, I'm sure, and Norm always had to rely on the kindness of well-connected businessmen.
8:57
Megan -  I mean, I'm sure the problem was that Norm (who, in my head, I'm pronouncing "Nawhm" as though I'm Cliff on Cheers) had to take bribes kindness from altruistic lobbyists and businessmen because the housing market was so tight in D.C. and he had so little money of his own.

Also: did the man learn nothing from the Duke-stir?
9:00
Pareene -  I gotta say there were some very affordable rentals in DC in Petworth and Columbia Heights if Norm was hurting for cash. He would've faced only occasional muggings and Metro derailments on the way to and from work, and I think the Target up there might've finally opened just before he left office to sue Al Franken forever.
9:01
Pareene -  I mean, Kal Penn is renting!
9:01
Pareene -  AND, breaking: "For starters, he's asking White House colleagues to call him Kalpen Modi, his real name, which friends and family use now."
9:01
Pareene -  Despite that request I am guessing everyone is calling him Kumar
