Community Conversation chat with Opinion page staff: Nov. 5, 2009

11:27
Mark Hilgenberg -  Good morning. We will be starting our chat shortly. Please start submitting questions, which will wait in a queue until we're ready to begin.
11:27
Karen Lincoln Michel -  Excuse me. That last message was from me. Warren Bluhm and I will be conducting the chat.
11:31
Warren Bluhm -  We don't have a guest this week after all, so it's "Open Line Thursday." I may be able to announce next week's guest chatter by the end of the hour, and in any case I expect to be able to identify our visitor by the end of today - so keep an eye on our new Community Conversations blog. Hello everyone.
11:32
Karen Lincoln Michel -  Hello back.
11:32
Warren Bluhm -  The good news is we've already received a couple of thoughts from readers, so let's leap into the fray ...

Now that Barbara Lawton is out of the Governor's race, are the Democrats already "gasping for air" in this campaign, as a Republican source in one of your stories in today's paper suggested?

Karen Lincoln Michel -  There's still time yet for the Democrats. But the  governor’s race so far has been  quite interesting, especially since we’re a year out and there is no strong Democratic candidate. That is due, in part, to feet-dragging by Gov. Jim Doyle, who pulled a “Brett Favre” move and hinted that he might come back. That’s after campaigning in 2002 that he would only serve two terms. All Democrats interested in putting themselves into the race waited for Doyle to announce his plans, and waited. Meanwhile, Milwaukee County Executive Director Scott Walker, a Republican, got a head start on campaigning, as did former U.S. Rep. Mark Neumann, another Republican.

When Doyle finally ended speculation of him running for a third term, Lt. Gov. Barbara Lawton announced the very next day that she would enter the race – a move that was widely expected. She seemed to be waiting in the wings for months (possibly even longer), ready to make a run for governor.

People are still perplexed why she got out. In a cryptic kind of way, she said that it might become clear as time goes on. I guess time will tell.

But as far as the governor’s race, I think all eyes are on Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett to make an announcement that he has thrown his hat in the ring.

Warren Bluhm -  I don't get the feeling the Dems are overly concerned. The very top Democrat in the state (I'm looking at you, Jim Doyle) never has shown a great deal of respect for Barbara Lawton, and I think he and other top Dems are getting someone primed - probably Tom Barrett. Just my humble opinion.

What did you think of Obama's speech yesterday in Madison about education? Didn't seem to have much substance.
11:36
Warren Bluhm -  It did seem a lot of hoopla for a $5 billion program.
