Jason Sobel Live From The Tour Championship Round 2

10:56
Kevin Maguire, ESPN.com -  Jason Sobel will be joining us shortly live from East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Ga.
11:02
@JasonSobel -  Good morning from bucolic East Lake Golf Club, where Round 2 of the Tour Championship will get under way in just a little while, with the final pairing of Sean O’Hair and Stewart Cink teeing off at 1:55 p.m. local time.

What have we learned so far? Well, a few things …

Tiger is a good tipper.

On Wednesday, Woods and O’Hair played a practice round together, with TW offering some putting advice to his buddy. One day later, O’Hair parlayed that tip into an opening-round 4-under 66 to claim sole possession of the lead.

Woods and Harrington are on the clock.

OK, maybe not officially, but you know everyone will be keeping a close eye on their watches as these guys are paired once again six weeks after being put on the clock with three holes to play at Firestone. Remember, though: They played together three times the next week at Hazeltine without issue, so don’t expect any major controversy today.

Is there a home-course advantage?

No competitor knows East Lake like Stewart Cink, and he parlayed that course knowledge into a 3-under 67 on Thursday. He’ll be trying to keep it going with plenty of hometown folks rooting him on from the gallery.

Phil pulls a quad.

Phil Mickelson played 17 holes in 1-under yesterday, but a quadruple-bogey on No. 14 dropped him into a share of 26th place by day’s end. Yes, he can get back into this tournament, but it’s going to take a low number today.

It’s Friday! Time to start Happy Hour early and stick right here with the Live Blog all day. I’ll be your guide from first tee shot to final putt, so don’t go anywhere. And as always, questions and comments can be added here on the page or via Twitter at JasonSobel. Should be a fun one. You may now swing away …

@JasonSobel -  First issue of the day.

I love that tournament officials re-pair players after each round here at the Tour Championship instead of just the weekend rounds. But wouldn't it make more sense to re-pair them based on their projected FedEx Cup points standing as opposed to their placement in the tourney?

Doing this would more likely give us a scenario in which the FedEx Cup could be decided by those in the final pairing come Sunday evening rather than the tourney itself.

Hmmm ... I smell a poll question.

Jason, read your article on O'Hair. How can he be T-5 in total putts, but leading in putting average after 1 round? Wouldn't everyone be dividing # of putts/# of holes?
11:10
@JasonSobel -  Nope. Putting average is actually the number of putts per green in regulation. It can be a misleading statistic -- if a player misses every green, then chips on and taps in for par, he'll have a great putting average -- but in some respects it serves more of a purpose than total putts.

Fact is, the best putting stat  may be  total distance of putts made. Not sure where O'Hair ranked yesterday, but he made one from 55 feet, another from 18 and a bunch from 10, so he's likely near the top in that category, too.
11:23
@JasonSobel -  We're still about 15 minutes away from the first pairing of the day, David Toms and Geoff Ogilvy, teeing it off. These guys may be battling for DFL on the leaderboard, but don't cry for them just yet.

A player can finish both last in this tournament and last of everyone here in the FedEx Cup standings, but still pull a pretty solid payday.

Last place for the Tour Championship: $120,000.

Thirtieth place for the FedEx Cup: $175,000.

What that means is that every player in the field is guaranteed a very minimum of $295,000 directly deposited into their bank accounts on Monday morning, with a chance for a whole lot more, of course.

@JasonSobel -

For most of us, when we get some time off we play golf.

For professional golfers, they do anything but play golf.

Unless their name is Sean O'Hair. Fun stuff from the tourney leader after yesterday's round:

Q. How much golf did you play last week?
SEAN O'HAIR: I played six days in a row.

Q: Nice vacation, huh?
SEAN O'HAIR: Yeah, it was a good week off. Yeah, just played with my buddies, and we just had a good time. Did a lot of gambling and lost a lot of money. I lost a lot of money last week, but that's okay.

Q: I thought you were good.
SEAN O'HAIR: Yeah, I was giving them too many shots. They were winning the bets on the first tee.

Q: What did you play, Aronimink the whole time or bounce around?
SEAN O'HAIR: I played Aronimink, Kennett Country Club, I played Concord Country Club, and I think that was about it, yeah.

Q: Everyone was talking about needing a break. Why did you do this?
SEAN O'HAIR: I just felt like playing. I didn't go out and beat balls, I didn't go out on the putting green and putt. Really I got in my car, threw my clubs on the cart, and away we went. That was about it. It was a good time. We'd go have lunch afterwards or before we'd play and shoot the breeze a little bit. You know, I'm fortunate enough that my buddies, they are self-employed so they can take the time off through the week and go play a little bit. So it was fun.

Q: Sounds like you put them into early retirement with the money, right?
SEAN O'HAIR: I've taken a lot of money off them, so it's just kind of evening out. But I'm still up.

While the pairing method you suggest might be interesting, wouldn't it skew the competitive balance of the tournament? The person who's leading the TC, but behind in the overall FEC standings, would get the shaft (pun intended) in your scheme, wouldn't they?
11:47
@JasonSobel -  Well, either way, you're going to lose some of the drama. If the bigger thing is the FedEx Cup and not the tournament, then shouldn't that take precedence?

I say yes.
11:58
@JasonSobel -

I've migrated out to the first tee, where Jim Furyk and Kevin Na are about to tee off.

Another perfect day here at East Lake, with some puffy white clouds in the sky and a little less humidity than yesterday.

Might need to enjoy it while it lasts, though. Another storm is supposed to be coming through here tomorrow. That's bad news for a place that doesn't need any more rain.
