McClain's NFL combine chat

11:26
Elaine Sharpe -  Good morning gang. Thanks for tuning in for the third installment of this week's NFL combine chats. John will be on shortly, so get your questions ready.
11:28
Elaine Sharpe -  While you're waiting, you can check out his story on the Texans putting the franchise tag on Dunta Robinson: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/fb/texansfront/6269456.html
11:33
John McClain -  Before I get to your questions, I want to describe for you exactly where I am and what I'm doing. First, I guess you've seen my story on the Texans franchising Dunta Robinson. Smart move. For a while I didn't think they'd do it because I thought they'd get him signed, and it would have cost them about $3 million more to franchise him than it would have to sign him to a five-year deal with about $23 million guaranteed.

11:37
John McClain -  Now, I'm at Lucas Oil Stadium. The media room is on the club level. There are 350 of us scattered around the room working. There are three podiums for players. There are a lot of round tables for 10 for players.

Some NFL coaches and general managers come in for interviews. Some turn us down. Never figured out why other than they're paranoid and afraid of tough questions.

There'll be about 250 of 332 prospects brought to us. I do daily stories and prepare for the draft. I'll also do blogs and chats for Chron.com.

Alabama offensive tackle Andre Smith just left the podium in front of me. I'm waiting on Baylor offensive tackle Jason Smith and Rice tight end James Casey. Tight ends and offensive linemen are brought to us today.

Anyway, I wish all of you could be here. Now, on to your questions.

I think its great that we locked up Dunta for now. But do you think that he feels a little disrespected being franchised?
11:38
John McClain -  I'm sure he's angry that he didn't get the multiyear deal he wanted. He made $2.4 million last year. He'll make $9.57 million this year. Not a bad raise. And they can keep negotiating.

John if Everette, Orakpo and Maybin were to fall to 15 (hypothetical of course) who would we choose between the 3?
11:39
John McClain -  I don't think they would draft any of them. None play the left side. They want to keep Mario on the right side. Some scouts like Brown and Orakpo better at outside linebacker in a 3-4. Maybin is a third-year sophomore who's going to be a project. But you ask who I think they'd draft if they drafted one of the three, and I'd say Brown.

[Comment From UTGuy]
Now that Dunta is franchised, will the Texans give him a huge deal or pay him the one year tag? If another team offers him a good deal will the texans give him up for two first round picks?
11:40
John McClain -  No team is going to give Dunta more than the Texans are offering and then lose two first-round picks.
