11:14
Dwayne Fatherree/NOLA.com -  Thanks for coming in foir today's chat.
11:14
Dwayne Fatherree/NOLA.com -  We already have several questions and coments on deck which Jeff will be handling momentarily.

[Comment From John Roberts]
How about an increase incrementally?
11:20
[Comment From brown]
If the homestead exemption is raised will there be pressure on other forms of tax collection to make up any shortfall?
11:20
[Comment From Thom]
LA has an income tax, sales tax and property tax. Some states don't have all 3. I believe we should do away with at least one of them or all 3 should somewhat be lowered.

[Comment From edro]
just interested

[Comment From Keith]
What would be an appropriate amount for the homestead exemption to be raised?
11:20
[Comment From gonazp1]
What about taking out the exemption and everyone paying some portion of the tax. Has anyone done the numbers if that will lower some of the property tax rather than increasing the exemption? The next issue would be to evaluate all properties and I mean all of them.
11:22
Jeff Crouere -  My guest for this on-line chat is John   Roberts of the Taxpayers Union of Louisiana. Our question is whether the Homestead Exemption should be increased.  What do you think?
11:22
[Comment From Thom]
Absolutely
11:22
Jeff Crouere -  Here is the argument that I just heard from a legislator. It will increase the tax burden on those who have higher priced homes.
11:22
[Comment From Stuart]
Does anyone disagree? The question is, by how much? This is one of those quantities that was fixed in time with no provision for adjustment as costs, wages, and values grew
11:23
[Comment From Sal]
Yes. Double would be good. That money could be spent in the private sector not the goverment black hole.
11:23
Jeff Crouere -  Actually, many legislators are against the increase, which is why it has not been raised since 1982.
11:23
Jeff Crouere -  I say that we should force the issue like we did for the pay raise.
11:23
[Comment From gonazp1]
What about getting rid of the exemption and having everyone pay something? Like a minimum of $500 or something...
11:24
Jeff Crouere -  If the property taxes are increased, then what type of tax relief will they offer? Here is the problem, taxes are increasing due to the new assessments and homeowners are not getting any relief.
11:24
[Comment From gonazp1]
Has anyone done the numbers on that type of reversal?
11:25
[Comment From Andrew A.]
how much is Homestead exemption in the surrounding states?
