Live Texans chat

12:33
ChronicleSports -  Good morning, all. John should be with us shortly.
12:33
John McClain -  Gang, before we get started on this chat, let me inform you I'm still on vacation and will do a couple of blogs this week and another chat Thursday at noon. I'm not sure about the rest of the offseason program. I can tell you, though, that I'm quite excited about the season and the Texans' prospects for having their first winning record and making the playoffs for the first time.

I watched the first of the OTAs today. Players were scattered around the field with their position coaches. Cornerback Dunta Robinson wasn't there, of course. Two rookies -- defensive end Connor Barwin and running back Jeremiah Johnson -- can't participate in the OTAs because their colleges, Cincinnati and Oregon, haven't had their graduation. What a stupid rule. Common sense should prevail on this issue.

Now, let's get this show on the road.

Will we be using Anderson more as a slot receiver this year?
12:34
John McClain -  It's too early to say for sure, but I would imagine so. Remember, though, that Johnson and Walter also play well from the slot.

[Comment From Marcus]
Will James Casey's versitility allow him to be the long snapper as well as TE and H-Back which will free up an additional roster spot?
12:35
John McClain -  A long snapper can't afford to make mistakes. Clark Harris did a tremendous job in place of Bryan Pittman last season. Casey will get a lot of work in practice, and the coaches will just have to see how he can handle it. He'll have a lot on his plate, but we know he's smart enough and mature enough to handle it.

hey are we fired up about the texans? have you recharged your batteries?
12:36
John McClain -  I haven't even been off for a week, and I wrote a column last week. My batteries will recharge in June and July. And, yes, I'm excited. Real excited.

[Comment From D Frank]
John, THANKS for the chat! gosh I We enjoy it Any chance Darnell Jenkins makes the active roster
12:36
John McClain -  If a receiver like Jenkins improves on last season, he might have a chance. He's young and cheap.

[Comment From Bud]
What do you think about Gregg Easterbrook's Tuesday Morning Quarterback blog on Page 2 of the ESPN site? I've been reading it for years and am pretty impressed with his insights, despite his being primarily a Washington political reporter.
12:37
John McClain -  The one he wrote after the last game of the season in which he showed how wrong so many so-called experts are about a lot of things should be required reading for everyone in the business.

john..what happended you've been out and about for a while now.....what some news on the texans front im ready to get this train to the superbowl up and running broseph
12:38
John McClain -  After the OTAs and minicamp, the Texans will go dark until the end of July. I usually take off at this time, but I'm so excited about the season I had to do this chat. Megan Manfull is writing the stories for the Chronicle. Anna-Megan Raley and N.D. Kalu are doing videos for Chron.com

[Comment From Germaine]
Will jacoby jones get on the field consistanly this year or is he just relegated to special teams duty if he stays on the team at all?
12:39
John McClain -  If he doesn't hold the ball, I don't think he'll make the team. If he can hold it, I think he can be a dangerous punt returner and a weapon as a receiver, too.
12:39
[Comment From Marcus]
Do you expect Chris Brown to even make the team if healthy this year?
12:40
John McClain -  If Chris Brown is 100 percent coming out of preseason, he'll make the team. Ever since he came into the league, he's been good when healthy, but he gets hurt too much. He'd great a great addition if he's healthy. He's certainly not used up.

[Comment From Em]
Hey John, hope you're enjoying a much needed vacation. Any word on the contract situations of Demeco Ryans and Owen Daniels?
12:41
John McClain -  DeMeco's agent, Ben Dogra, came to Houston a couple of weeks ago to meet with Rick Smith, but nothing was done. They'll continue to talk. They'd like to sign both players before the season, but nothing's imminent. The draft choices take priority before camp.
