Blue Screen Live Chat

Ralph will be here at 12:30 but you can begin submitting your questions now!

Welcome to the most important Live Chat in the history of Live Chats. I say that with conviction today because the Giants are in a freefall and my finger is poised over the panic button. For more than a month I've been scouring game films and stats trying to figure out how this season has spiraled out of control and today, moments ago, I finally figured it out: The Giants were 5-0 on Oct. 13 when The Blue Screen hosted its last Live Chat. Since then, the Giants are 0-4. So blame the play-calling, the defense, or even Eli Manning if you want. But I choose to blame the Yankees for taking up the time of the overworked Blog Editors at NYDailyNews.com. If the Twins had beaten the Yanks in the first round, I would've had a Live Chat in the last five weeks and the Giants' bleeding would have stopped by now. That's why this Chat is so important. If the Giants win Sunday, we've solved the problem!!
12:31
Not sure that necessarily means I'll be doing Live Chats any more frequently. We might explore charging for them, though. I wonder how much it's worth to all of you to keep these Live Chats going so the Giants' season can be turned around ... Hmmmmmmm ..... Anyway, those are questions for another day. For now, we'll stick with your questions:

i really think we have great opportunity to win our division still. Do get the since being around the team that they feel the same way?
12:35
Absolutely. I think at times they're just saying it over and over again to make sure they keep believing. But those guys have a great understanding of how quickly things can change in the NFL. I mean, they lived it just two years ago. In 2007 with three weeks to go in the regular season we were talking about the possible end of the Tom Coughlin era. Two months later they were Super Bowl champs. Last year at this point the stories out of Philly were about the end of the Reid/McNabb era. Two months later they were in the NFC championship game. So just because Dallas looked like it was pulling away didn't mean they would. The Giants knew that. And they certainly know it now that they're only a game back. Believe me, no one in the Giants' locker room thinks the Cowboys are a much better team.

Do you think Bill Sheridan and the Defense can turn things around in the second half? Until the last drive against the Chargers it looked like they were starting to come around. Now that they are at full strength (with the exception of Kenny Phillips) do you think they can be the ferocious D that we were all expecting at the start of the season?
12:38
I don't know about "ferocious." I think if they were going to get to that point we would have seen it already. But I think they can turn things around. We certainly saw signs of that against San Diego. They played much better until the final drive. Getting healthy will help. I've said this before and I'll keep saying it:: Their struggles weren't a mystery. They were playing without five key players (DT Chris Canty, DT Jay Alford, LB Michael Boley, CB Aaron Ross, S Kenny Phillips). Take five key players (and 3-4 starters) away from any defense in the NFL and they would struggle. So getting back to close to full strength is important. That will help in the second half. But they won't play ferociously until they're more comfortable. I'm concerned about all the communication issues I see (ones that Sheridan has said he doesn't see, by the way). There's too much uncertainty, too much thinking, too much discussion about calls in the seconds before the ball is snap. If they're that unsure, there's no way they can just pin their ears back and play. That's when players play "ferocious" - when they're completely comfortable and are confident they know exactly what they're supposed to do. This defense isn't there yet. And after nine games, that concerns me.

Ralph: Is the defensive coordinator getting any heat from within about his poor blitzing schemes? And, do you think he will change some things (like NOT having the D ends in coverage!)?
12:42
I guess it depends on how you describe "heat." I'm sure Tom Coughlin has gone down to his office and told him the play and schemes need to improve. I'm sure he's said it loudly and with authority. But if by "heat" you're referring to job security, then no. The Giants have rarely changed coaches, coordinators or assistants midseason and it's not really Coughlin's way either. He believed in Sheridan enough to hire him and he's going to give him more than a partial season to prove what he can do. That said, I have no doubt Coughlin has discussed with him what needs to change, especially after they did their "self-scouting" during the bye week. Exactly what will change, I don't know. But it sounds to me like the players object to the ends dropping into coverage, so that's one possible area. By the way, since there's a lot of focus on that I should point out that the ends dropped into coverage A LOT under Steve Spagnuolo and nobody complained. It only became and issue because Sheridan said that's something he likely wouldn't do as often. Obviously that philosophy changed. But it's hardly the reason for the defensive struggles.

[Comment From Big Blues]
Is it too early to call this offseason's defensive signings a bust - at least for this season? Boley was toasted by Gates, and Canty and Bernard are medical casualties. Looking back were any of those signings a mistake?
