Devra First on food and dining out

11:05
Devra First -  Hi everyone. Sorry I'm a little late. Stuck in traffic. How are you?

Hi Devra -- nice piece this morning on fish tacos. Can't wait to try some of them out.
11:06
Devra First -  Thanks. Enjoy! Here is the fish taco link.

Hi Devra, I wonder if you can tell us how you manage the weight/health aspect of eating out all the time. I know that once upon a time I was one of those people who could eat without apparent consequence. At A Certain Age, that changed and I had to start watching what I eat. Two thousand calories goes by really fast on a careful diet. Eating out, that can sometimes be passed before you get very far into the entre. I know how I deal with it – I don’t eat out often, so that I can feel free to enjoy and indulge when I do. However, you make your living eating out. I would love to hear any “tricks” that might tempt me out more often. (I’m very jealous when I read your reviews since I know I can rarely eat the meals I read about.)

Devra First -  I'm afraid I've reached that Certain Age myself. I eat mostly fruit and vegetables during the day, knowing I'll be eating fried food and tons of butter later. I try to exercise regularly. I'm not the most disciplined person in the universe where that is concerned, unfortunately, and I'd be lying if I said this job hasn't caught up with me at all in that regard. It is a bit of a struggle.

Looking for a great spot for lunch at South station. Tired of Les Zygomates, Radius (too expensive), Flour (good but too far), or Hei La Moon for dim sum. Thanks.

Devra First -  Xinh Xinh for Vietnamese? Channel Cafe? (They have fish tacos!) Too bad Persephone closed. If I worked near Chinatown, I would gradually work my way through all the neighborhood restaurants. Anyone work near there and have other suggestions?

11:12
Devra First -  Glad you're good! I like Blue Ribbon the best. How about all of you?
11:12
[Comment From Guy]
Blue Ribbon is where I'd go.
11:12
Devra First -  Great sauces. Their pulled pork sandwich is really good.

Two weeks ago you asked about tomatoes -- I hadn't tried the ones that came in on our CSA at the time. I can now safely report that our tomatoes have been unexciting. Scarcely better than supermarket tomatoes. Cherry tomatoes, though, have been great. Otherwise, the CSA this year has been a boatload of green and yellow beans, sweet corn, and some lettuce. A few small turnips and beets, and yesterday we got about 8 small Italian eggplants.
11:14
Devra First -  What are you going to do with the eggplants? We haven't gotten any, and I miss them. Lots of potatoes and a nice bunch of leeks now, though. I made potato leek soup over the weekend. And I've had a few decent tomatoes since last chat. And lots of great corn! And peaches! Though those didn't come from the CSA.

Hello - any good deals still out there in the city now that restaurant week is over? (steak and seafood interest mostly)
11:17
Devra First -  There are tons. Quite a few restaurants extended restaurant week, and many offer good prix fixe deals. For example, Morton's is doing a three-course steak and seafood dinner for $49.99. Here is the menu. You just have to poke around a bit to find the deals. Check out the websites of places you'd like to try and see what they say.

I'm not sure about the eggplants yet -- I love eggplant parm, but I also recently had some great Sichuan-style stir-fried eggplant, and I'd like to try making it myself.
11:18
Devra First -  That sounds great. I like to roast them over a burner and then make baba ganoush.

Where is the best Pulled pork sandwich in Boston? Is Blue Ribbon the tops?
11:19
Devra First -  It's my tops for sure. Anyone else have contenders?
