Kristin Hokanson -  Mindset of railways in N America...4 ' 8.5" that seems to be a aribitrary number...question WHY...why do they use that railspacing... That was the railspacing used to make the 1st rail spacing in England...and most of the US Rails build by English Expats....they were the same folks who built the first horse drawn wagons & that was the axel width...WHY...they had to...because the wheel ruts were that widths...so where did the old modern roads in England come from...they were built by imperial Rome for Roman military ...that was axel width of Roman chariots..everyone had to adjust to those wheel ruts...Conforms to axel width of Roman Chariot from thousands of years ago...

Kristin Hokanson -  What horse's back side came up with that way of doing things...the width of the Roman Chariots were determined because that was how it was always done...even though the world has changed...
2 horses asses determined the way we do things 2 centuries later

The railways example is another good one. It's also in that article for those who want to read the details - http://www.edtechnot.com/notarticle103.html. (Plus it has a great punchline.)
