Chat with Chad Finn at 2 p.m.

1:53
Boston.com -  Hi chatters. Chad will be here to take the baton from Adam Kilgore in a few minutes, but feel free to start submitting questions now . . .
2:05
Chad Finn -  Hey guys -- Is that Kilgore punk done yet or what?
2:07
Chad Finn -  I believe Adam just shattered my Boston.com chat length record. And it's going to stand for a while, I suspect. The dude is seriously the best. Anyway, let's get to the questions . . . curious what the optimism level is for Game 2.

Good afternoon Chad. I think a nap before the game tonight will be a must! This one is going extra innings I fear. Do you see this as a must win? For the Angels I mean ; )
2:11
Chad Finn -  I'm all for naps, no matter what the circumstances. I like your tone, but I'm pretty worried about this one and the series as a whole, and that's coming from someone who wrote "i like this team" about 100 times over the last month or so. I'm nervous as hell that there's something wrong with Beckett that we don't know about. He's had a 4.53 ERA in the second half, gave up 30 hits in 24 innings in Sept/Oct, and just hasn't resembled the same guy he was in the summer.
2:12
Chad Finn -  So the key is getting to Weaver, and I think they can, though he's had decent success against them in the past. Really, really, really hoping to see a three-run bomb from VMart or Ortiz in the early going.

Adam went two hours. You can beat that.

Chad Finn -  Adam's much younger than me. You're lucky if I don't fall asleep in the middle of this sucker. These late night games are a grind for an old man like me.

Biggest surprise from yesterday: Lester losing? Lackey winning in post season? Umpires being horrible? Ramirez nailing Hunter? JP Losman winning a football game? Left Fielder, not named Manny, being horrible defensively? Or WEEI not having any dent in its ratings, while 98.5 showing decent ratings?
2:15
Chad Finn -  Wow, lots of options. I'd have to say Losman winning, although he is the signature player of the UFL. (Was Cade McNown unavailable?) Lackey was no suprise to me -- he's a very good pitcher, and he's had some pretty impressive starts against the Sox the last couple of years. (Remember the near no-hitter at Fenway?). Have to admit I was a little disappointed in Lester. He was good, but it wasn't out of the realm of possibility to expect him to be great. His command was off just enough to make him hittable.
2:16
Chad Finn -  Holliday's a hack in the outfield. He reminds me of Greenwell.
2:19
Chad Finn -  And as far as the ratings go, it was a win-win for both, it seems to me. (And I fully admit I'm no expert at the ratings game just yet, and Arbitron is of no help.) The Sports Hub made a great leap, but it didn't really ding WEEI, which was first in the 25-54 demographic with D+C and The Big Show. On the other hand, the overall 2.5 rating for the Sports Hub as well as the 4.4 Felger and Mazz got from ages 25-54 in the afternoon was pretty damn impressive, and I suspect advertisers will see it the same way. Ultimately, it boils down to the this: EEI knows it's in for a challenge, and it's been making changes that acknowledge as much. And The Sports Hub's ratings are further confirmation.

Let me see if I have this straight - the Angels get completely jobbed on what should've been a game ending strike out at Fenway, get called sore losers, whiners, etc. by Sox fans and now those same fans are screaming and yelling about two close plays last night? Lack of hitting (and Lackey) cost the Sox that game, not the umps.
2:20
Chad Finn -  The game-ending strikeout eludes me, but I agree that the umps had no bearing on this game save for the fact that they forced Lester to throw 5-10 more pitches. Bucknor is a notoriously horrible umpire, and what happened last night couldn't have come as a surprise to either side. You just hope -- baseball cliche -- that they all even up in the end.

After last night's pathetic game by the Bruins is it still too early to ask where the offense, and particularly Kessel's 36 goals, are going to come from this season?
2:22
Chad Finn -  Yes. Too early. Although according to Fluto, Julien put them through the paces in practice today. It wasn't exactly Herb Brooks making the "Miracle on Ice" team skate in the dark before the Olympics, but it apparently wasn't that far off either.
2:23
Chad Finn -  As far as replacing Kessel goes, I think they're expecting to pick up the slack with Sturm and a couple of the kids. And maybe they'll save a few goals by replacing Kessel with someone who isn't so casual defensively.

What in the world was Francona thinking putting Ramon into a winnable game last night? He should have been nearly the LAST choice out of the pen, not the first. 3-0 we still had a shot.
2:26
Chad Finn -  Yeah, he's been a little shaky lately. OK, a lot shaky. But down 3-0 in a game in which it looks like you're not going to score a run if it went 18 innings, I   don't blame him for not using Wagner or even Bard in the seventh inning. That's the time for Saito and Ramirez. Use the other guys when you have a lead.

[Comment From Justin]
why aren't we seeing Dusty Brown? I thought he had a great arm, was good defensively and can't possibly be worse at hitting than Varitek. I'm suprised the Angels didn't steal ten on us last night and if the Sox get deeper, teams will steal
