Discuss the Chargers with Union-Tribune writer Kevin Acee

k acee -  I'm here early. Ready to talk Chargers.

Kevin, I think for the chargers to go from good to dominant we must improve Safety and Rt. side of O-line. What do you believe is AJ's optimum plan. Thanks
11:59
k acee -  For this year, the Chargers' plan is Clinton Hart and Kevin Ellison at strong safety. Hart likely won't lose his starting job, but it's up to Ellison to earn more PT. And the right side of the line will be Forney at G and Clary at T.

whats your record prediction
12:00
k acee -  Haven't gone through game by game. It appears to be a tough one. But I really do think healthy, they will improve greatly. Let's say (four months minus one day before the opener): 11-5

Do you think that the Chargers will bring in a veteran free agent Safety or stay with what they have?
12:01
k acee -  Hart is what they're going with, but they believe Ellison can be a big contributor.

if the chargers let merriman go, do you think they will be stabbing themselves in the back?
12:05
k acee -

Interesting way to put it. I don't know if you actually meant to make me think this hard. I don't think exactly they'll be betraying themselves, but I think they'll be hurting themselves in the short term. But let's not get ahead of ourselves. I know I'm the one who first brough this up, and it is a valid point of conversation, but he will be with the Chargers through at least 2010.

right from the moment they gave Castillo the big contract I thought it was a mistake considering he hadn't done anything outstanding in my opinion, why do you think AJ did it?
12:10
k acee -  Because  he sees the potential Castillo has. Luis has a ton of it. Now, that's a denagerous word. It might as well be a four-letter word it's so scary and can leave us all unfulfilled and angry. Luis needs to stay healthy, and I still say he's a Pro Bowler. But, yes, as of now, after one year, that does not look like a good contract, or it appears premature, at best. But if he realizes that potential, it's a great contract all around. Let's give Luis another year.

In your opinion, did Cromartie's injury justify his lack of physicality, or is this a mental thing?
12:10
k acee -  The feeling in the organization is it was more mental than anything.

[Comment From mike b]
i believe that the lack of physicality last year was do to the lack of a physical d cord
12:14
k acee -  Lot of confusion on that defense last year. Lots. Ron Rivera made a difference late and will make a bigger difference in '09.

do you think the cotrell hire was smart?
12:15
k acee -

Seriously? I put his feet to the fire from the second game of 2007. I tried to be fair, which is my job. But it was a horrible hire. I know what was behind it; it didn't work out.

Is this the first time Buster Davis will be "right" concerning his groin injury from college, or is this the kind of injury that surgery cannot correct completely?
