Charles Davis -  Hi, this is Press-Gazette reporter Charles Davis. City Traffic Engineer Dave Hansen has joined me to answer questions about any traffic problems you have noticed at city intersections. One way to fix  a problem is  to replace  a stop sign with a traffic light and vice versa. So let us know what you think.

Charles: Your story said the traffic study should be done by the end of year. Can your guest talk about why it takes so long and when actual changes can be expected?

Dave Hansen -  Traffic studies require a lot of data collection such as manual traffic counts which requires a worker to observe and summarize the data at multiple locations.   We average about 1 intersection per week.

What goes into studying traffic patterns to determine where lights or stop signs should go?
3:11
Dave Hansen -  We evaluate traffic signal warrants.   The warrants are established by the Federal Hwy Administration.   There is primary 8 criteria we evaluate.   If one or more criteria is met, then further consideration is given whether a signal is the right type of control at the location.   In other words, it does not mean that a signal is required if one or more warrant is met.

Everyone seems to hate roundabouts, but based on my experience in De Pere they're not that bad and they actually let people through that intersection at a relatively decent clip.

Dave Hansen -  Roundabouts are another type of intersection control, like STOP, YIELD, and traffic signal.   They have their safety benefits when applied and designed correctly.
