Tony Massarotti: -  Hi everyone and thanks for joining again. Appreciate your patience as it's been a while since the last chat, but look at the bright side: we have plenty to catch up on!
12:05
Tony Massarotti: -  Let's get to it...

Seven years ago if someone told you that Sheed Wallace and Grant Hill (maybe) would be on your second string, would you (a) believe them and (b) how insane of a team would they have had?
12:06
Tony Massarotti: -  Interesting way of looking at it. Personally, I like the Wallace move. He obviously comes with some issues, but it's all about ``the fit'' - and I think Garnett, Rivers and Ainge have set the agenda here already. I believe this can work and will work.

I read that the Sox won't make a move until they know Lowell's situation. So, any idea when a prognosis will be in and who are some possible first or third basemen that could be on their way to Boston?
12:07
Tony Massarotti: -  Well, it stands to reason. If Lowell cannot play, they need to address the issues on the left side of the infield. Certainly, Youkilis gives them great flexibility to do so, which means they could end up going after a first baseman instead. But given where they are in the standings, etc., there is no point in making a move until you have as much information as possible - I'd expect them to go as close to July 31 as possible.

MAZZ, Why did thr Sox call up Bates over Lars Anderson? Wouldn't it benefit Anderson to start getting some AB's in the bigs?
12:08
Tony Massarotti: -  Anderson hasn't had a great year and bats left-handed. They needed a righty bat, especially with the lefties Oakland threw in the first two games. Kotsay should play tonight - that was my understanding as I left Fenway late last night.

With Jed Lowerie moved to the 60 day DL, is this the end for him this season and what do the Red Sox do for a SS?
12:10
Tony Massarotti: -  No! By placing him on the 60-day DL, the Red Sox merely have taken him off their 40-man roster. To get him back on, they will need to clear a spot for him. Lots of ways to do that, beginning with, say, the release of someone like Lugo. That is just a guess, but that would be the simplest way to do it.

Here's what I think about Halladay. We decide what is more important. The offense needs a bat (especially if lowell isn't 100%) or add one more dominant arm that will almost dare i say it guarantee a WS even with a Offense that can go through spotty stretches
12:11
Tony Massarotti: -  Let's slow down on the Halladay stuff. The Jays will want a king's ransom for him and Theo has given no indication (ever) that he is willing to move a package of top prospects for an elite veteran. Look it up. The Red Sox LOVE their kids.

How do you see the Beckett negotiations going? How many years? How much? any chance he leaves?
12:13
TwitterGlobeAllSports -  Mazz blog: Ellsbury adds another weapon: consistency - http://is.gd/1rd3F
12:13
Tony Massarotti: -  Good questions all. They have an option on him for 2010, which I expect they will exercise. Once that happens, it depends on the market and his desire to strike it rich. He doesn't seem to be a money-first guy. Winning is important to him and a place like Boston would be the best place for him to accomplish career goals. Maybe $16M a year? Hard to know where he would draw the line.

Mazz, what comparisons do you draw between Nomar's departure in '04 with Manny's in '08?
12:14
Tony Massarotti: -  Some, obviously. But Nomar was a home-grown superstar, Manny was not. I also think Manny had more value to the team on the field at the time of the deal. But similar moves, for sure.

Any chance the Sox get involved in Halladay trade?
