Discuss the Padres and other sports news with Union-Tribune columnist Nick Canepa

10:57
Nick Canepa -  Hi. This is Nick and I'm here until noon.

[Comment From Shawn]
Which (if any) of the 3 USC LBs best fit Rivera's scheme?
11:06
Nick Canepa -  I think all of them would fit in. Personally, I think Rey Maualuga could be the most disruptive player in this draft.

[Comment From Jeff]
Do you think Peavy will be dealt by the trading deadline ?
11:09
Nick Canepa -  I hope not, but I fear it will happen. I'm sure it all depends where the Padres are by the deadline. My biggest concern is that they're going to trade one of the best pitchers in baseball _ and just a real good guy on top of it all _ for zilch. I'm not a fan of trading away young aces.

Is it me, or do the Chargers need to start thinking about quasi-rebuilding? Jamal & LT are aging, all the good WRs are about to be free agents, ditto for Merriman & Gates, etc. Or, does the possible work stoppage make the point moot?
11:10
Nick Canepa -  What exactly needs rebuilding? This is not an old team, except in a few spots. The key for this team is re-signing its best players, and that's not going to be easy. When you have a lot of good players, it's very difficult to keep them all.

[Comment From Dave]
Doesn't Maualuga have character issues? AJ hasn't changed his policy on that sort of thing has he?
11:11
Nick Canepa -  I don't know exactly what those character issues are. They don't hate the kid, I know that.

[Comment From Keith]
The Chargers aren't going to start yet another (consecutive) season with huge holes at right tackle and strong safety are they? Bring back Stan Brock and Rodney Harrison!
11:14
Nick Canepa -  I'm afraid those two players you've mentioned are beyond helping right now. I believe the team needs help in both positions, and this isn't the first time I've said it. They know where there weaknesses are. Getting good players to fill the holes isn't easy. But they need a  playmaking safety and have needed one for a long time.

[Comment From Donna]
How can the Padres is miss so consistently in the draft? Any reason to be optimistic?
11:16
Nick Canepa -  Based on their track record, no. Their failure to draft quality dvery day players is uncanny. You have to luck into one once in a while, no? Other teams find them.

[Comment From Jeff]
I don't think ILB is the chargers biggest need at all. They have cooper , burnett, dobbins, and for some reason they are keeping wilhelm. I think the bigger problem is Safety. and DT. Do you agree?
11:18
Nick Canepa -  I can't say that's their biggest need, either. I think offensive line and safety is, with defensive end close. There are going to be good players available where they pick this year. It all depends where A.J. Smith sees the biggest need, and he's not telling us now. If he did, he'd probably lie about it, as he admits he does all the time in April.

[Comment From PadHead]
Will Kevin Towers still be GM 18 months from now?
11:19
Nick Canepa -  I hope so. Absolutely no way of knowing how Moorad is going to feel by then.
11:19
[Comment From Shawn]
If Buster Davis is able to overcome his injury problems do you see him as a #2 or a #3 receiver?
11:20
Nick Canepa -  Yes. I think he has great speed and hands, but none of that does you any good if you can't get off the stretcher. He has the ability to make an impact.

[Comment From P. Walters]
Is Rivers going to make it hard on the Chargers to re-sign him?? Why hasn't it happened already?
