Brian Wynne -  Welcome, everyone--thanks for joining.   Looking forward to chatting with you.

In case you are new to EDTA, we are a cross-industry trade association that works in Washington and beyond to promote the electrification of transportation, including battery, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fuel cell vehicles.   EDTA’s membership includes automotive and other equipment manufacturers, energy companies, technology developers, battery and component suppliers, and others.

If EV really takes off, what confidence level do you have that the electric utilities will be able to keep up with demand?
2:01
Brian Wynne -  My confidence level is extremely high.   Studies show that the existing grid could fuel a fleet that was 73% plug in vehicles.   It's a question of managing the demand.

What does EDTA see as the critical investments needed to support the electrification of the car?
2:05
Brian Wynne -  Critical investment areas are both upstream and downstream--in research & development, in manufacturing, and in developing markets, i.e. consumer incentives and infrastructure.

What electric vehicles can consumers expect to find in showrooms in 2010?
2:07
Brian Wynne -  There will both battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles coming to market in 2010. Too many to name here, but here's a link to the list on our site:

Consumers were confused when there were multiple DVD formats. They stopped shopping until the 'format wars' were settled. Isn't there the same / worse situation with EV, given the proliferation of niche next gen vehicle types? (pure E / HE / diesel / biodiesel / fuel cell / HDE etc.

Brian Wynne -  We think a variety of transportation ideas will be necessary. Different transportation needs will dictate the adoption of different vehicle technologies.

In the plug-in arena, there is not a Beta VHS problem--the charging infrastructure being developed will serve both battery electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.

EV enthusiasts promote the no-emissions characteristics of the vehicles. Detractors say the pollution is just moving from the tailpipe to the smokestack, some claiming it's actually worse. Do you know of a truly objective study on this topic? If so, what were the results?
