From Staff Writer Christy Hoppe, on the ground at Fort Hood:

Several thousand soldiers in gray fatigues have gathered inside the makeshift memorial are -- the size of several football fields --awaiting the arrival of President Barack Obama. They stand behind a stage set with the Third Army Corps Headquarters flag waving gently at half-staff.

Some civilians and children dot the crowd. Some of the soldiers said they have come to stand together and are proud that Obama will honor their fallen comrades.
