Bonjour from Monte Carlo! Welcome to 24 straight days of cycling talk from the Tour de France. I'll be chatting with you today for about three hours, altough I'll have to slip away occasionally to do a little writing, too.
BIG NEWS: I just slipped out of a press conference with Astana's boss man, Johan Bruyneel, and his team leader, Alberto Contador. That's right, Contadar, the 2007 champion, starts the Tour Saturday as the official, no-two-ways-about it TEAM LEADER. Bruyneel gave him the No. 21 jersey - and it's the "1" that's significant. (As defending champion, Carlos Sastre of the Cervelo Test Team will wear No. 1.) Armstrong, who last won in 2005, will be No. 22. How strange is that going to look?

DaleRobertson - Another strange sight: Seeing Armstrong start his time trial among the lounge-act set. He goes off 18th - at 9:17 a.m. Houston time. If he's fully on form, it's going to seriously demoralize an awful lot of the 162 riders who have to follow his lead.
Defending champion Carlos Sastre will be the last to leave the gate, at 12:07:30.
