Mark Gaughan's Live Chat

11:05

Good morning football fans. I was worried our Friday chats would gradually run out of steam as the season winds down, but lo and behold, we have plenty to talk about.
First thing: Say a prayer for Chris Spielman and his family, in the wake of the death of Stefanie Spielman due to her long battle with breast cancer. Chris was one of the all-time great Bills in my book, even though he
only played here three years. And Stefanie was a true hero in the fight against breast cancer.

Here is a touching story on her: http://www.jamesline.com/waystogive/funds/spielman/Pages/index.aspx

Here is a link to the Stefanie Spielman Fund for breast cancer research: http://www.dispatch.com/live/content/local_news/stories/2009/11/20/0_SPIELMAN_--_paper_story.ART_ART_11-20-09_A1_JGFO3TQ.html?sid=101

One more thing before we start. There are a zillion great Spielman stories. One I like: It's the Bills' first preseason game in 1996, at home, Spielman's debut with the Bills. Kent Hull comes into the locker room about 3 hours before the game,
not many in there yet, but Chris Spielman is sitting in front of his locker, in full uniform, helmet, spikes, taped, ready for the game. Hull says to Spielman: Chris do you realize Marv Levy is coaching this team and you're going to be lucky to play one series tonight? Spielman says, No I'm playing, I'm playing the whole way. Of course, he only played a series.

On to your questions and comments: Fire away.

[Comment From MVB2008]
Do you think that Shanahan is a real possibility? Carrucci's reports sounded very promising, but Ralph's comments dampened my excitement, what do you think?
11:10

I think the Bills will make an honest run at Shanahan. Do I think he ultimately will end up in Buffalo? You'd have to say the odds are against it. But that doesn't mean it won't happen. The odds were against TO landing here. (This is a totally different thing.) MORE

11:11
It's just that: Put yourself in Shanahan's shoes. The next job you take is going to be your last. Would you jump into the first good offer you get, or would you take your time and see what's out there??? I think he's got to do the latter. MORE
11:11
And if the Dallas job opens up, who wouldn't take that job? That job is a ticket to the Hall of Fame for Shanahan. And I'm not trying to exaggerate.

[Comment From John]
Do you think it's possible the Bills make a hire before the end of the season? What if Shanahan or Cowher were named head coach/GM? Is it possible to have them come on only as GM for the rest of the season? That way he could evaluate the players and coaching staff and get a seven week head start.
11:12
I think it's possible but the odds are very much against it. ... Again, if you're Shanahan or Cowher, there is no gun to your head. Don't you owe it to yourself to see what's out there, no matter how attractive the first offer you get might be???

Mark, I'm curious about starting Fitz at qb for the jags game. He has a 49 qb rating and cant move the offense. The most yards he has thrown for in one game is 123, most of them coming in garbage time. Meanwhile, Trent played 3 good quarters and converted 12 passing first downs. I just do not understand Fitz's appeal....
