Dan Gottlieb -

I am pleased to be joined by Dr. Leo McCluskey today. He is Associate Professor of Neurology at the University of Pennsylvania and Medical Director of the ALS Association Center at Penn Comprehensive Neuroscience Center. I first met him last month when I saw him professionally about a series of symptoms I've been having over the last year that have not been diagnosed. We spend an hour together exploring my symptoms, possible explanations and the very real possibility that I would have to live with these symptoms for the rest of my life. I left that in counter struck by his thoughtfulness, compassion and honesty. So, not surprisingly, he sent me the e-mail that prompted this discussion. So I think about this web chat as around themes of hope, hopelessness and healing.

As usual, Dr. McCluskey and I will chat with the first part of the hour and invite readers to join in there after. But please submit your comments and issues while we talk.

Dr. McCluskey thanks so much for joining us.

What got you started thinking about this business of hope and hopelessness?
