Playoff Central: PIAA championship

4:19
Hi, fans. Thanks for checking goerie.com and this live blog from today's PIAA Class AAA girls soccer final between McDowell and Downingtown West.
4:20
Because of PIAA regulations, I'll be unable to provide minute-by-minute updates of the action between the 21-3 Trojans and the 22-1-1 Whipeets. However, any significant play, corner kick, penalty kick, goal, etc., I'll try to file as soon as possible.

As most scholastic soccer fans in northwestern Pennsylvania know, no District 10 team of any kind has ever won a state title outright. Cathedral Prep came the closest in 2001, when the Ramblers and Strath Haven boys were declared co-champions of the PIAA AAA final after they couldn't resolve their 1-1 tie after four overtimes.
4:23
A Trojans upset of the two-time state champion Whippets would not only make them the first PIAA title team in school history, but the first in our corner of the state.

The weather en route to Hershey on Saturday was overcast, but all but cleared up around the Susquehanna Valley. As dawn sets on Hersheypark Stadium, the temperatures are in the upper 40s and dropping, but there is only a scant trace of wind. Weather should have almost zero factor on the teams.

4:26
McDowell will be designated the home team, wearing its all-white uniforms with blue numbers. Downingtown West will wear all-light blue uniforms with light yellow numbes and trim.
4:28
The family of McDowell defender Emily Adamski was in the stands more than an hour before today's 5 p.m. opening whistle. They were there even before the Trojans' bus pulled into the stadium shortly after 4 p.m.

4:29
Regardless of the outcome, McDowell athletic director Brian Fuller said the team will stay in the Harrisburg area overnight, then depart for home Sunday around 8 a.m. The team expects to pull into McDowell High School sometime between 2 and 3 p.m.
4:32
The afternoon results at Hersheypark Stadium are not a good omen for the Trojans. Teams from the east won all three games.
District 1 Christopher Dock beat Seton LaSalle 2-1 in the Class A boys game, followed by Loyalsock's 1-0 victory over Springdale in Class AA girls.
McDowell and Downingtown West players were getting ready for warmups while some membes of the Octorara boys were still celebrating their 2-1 victory over Hampton in the AA boys final.
4:34
McDowell fans appear to have a slight edge of Downingtown West's contingent with 23 minutes left before the opening whistle. However, fans are still filing in for both sides.
