Good morning. I knew the Sabres going after Jay Bouwmeester was a pipedream, but it would have been nice if they took a shot at Mike Komisarek. He signed with the Leafs for $4.5 million per season, which was pretty reasonable for a big, hard-hitting defenseman these days. Steve Montador will help on the toughness side of things. He plays with an edge. He doesn't have a ton of talent, but he gets the most out of what he has. By the way, my vacation was great. Thanks for asking.

Will the Sabres acquire an offensive defenseman who can man the point on the PP and replace Spacek's offense? Don't tell me it's Butler or Myers or Sekera.

It looks like Butler, Myers or Sekera at this point.  They're not terrible options, by the way. Spacek's offense came  largely because he has the best opportunity. He led the Sabres in  ice time, I believe. Butler can shoot the puck. Myers can shoot the puck.  Fans are going to like Myers, but it's going to take a little while for him to get adjusted. At this point, there aren't many offensive D-men available. Every team needs them, so they don't want to give them up. In free agency, they come with a hefty price tag.

Huge Buzz here in Chicago about Hossa! What do you think about the length and terms of the contract. People here already feel burned about Cambell's contract, should have learned from it.

Hossa's contract is frontloaded, so I don't look at it as a 12-year deal. I said yesterday it seems more like a seven- or eight-year deal with a buyout. It gives Hossa enough dough and the Blackhawks a cap-friendly number -- for now. The problems for the Blackhawks will surface next season, when Kane, Toews and Keith become restricted free agents. One will likely be gone. Hossa was a huge pickup despite his disappearance from the finals.

Does the signing of Montador mean bye-bye Hank or are we stuck with him and his soft play for yet another year?
11:36
No, as I suggested this morning, I think it opens the door for Darcy to make other moves. He can start with Tallinder and think about moving Lydman. We'll see what he gets in return, preferably young players. But it also clears out money for players who aren't going to be here beyond this season.

when will this "show" ever end?... its torture watching teams make real moves.. whether they work or not.. but we are at the mercy of regier and quinn

Good question. I see other teams who are always active (NYR, Philly, Toronto) and others have been quiet. I'm not expecting the Sabres to make big splashes in free agency, but I would like to see them get more involved. For now, you're at the mercy of management. What they do -- and how you react to what they do -- is up to each individual fan.

Have you heard anything in regards to Koivu? Is he playing with his brother, his best friend from Finland, or his best friend from the Habs (Craig Rivet) next year?
