McClain's NFL combine chat

11:04
John McClain -  Before I get to your questions, which I can answer until right before 1 when Gary Kubiak comes to the podium for 15 minutes before Rick Smith comes for 15, let me tell you some good news: Well, only good if you went to Baylor. The buzz is that if Detroit passes on QB Matthew Stafford the Lions might take Baylor OT Jason Smith. Imagine that. A Baylor player taken first in the draft.

I'll believe it when I see it. By the way, Rice has become a football factory. The Owls have twice as many prospects at the combine than Notre Dame and Miami. TE James Casey and WR Jarret Dillard blew away the media in separate interviews. That's what intelligence and personality can do.

Now, let's get it started.

anything good today at the combine so far?
11:06
John McClain -  I've been doing interviews since 9 this morning. I haven't been able to pay attention to the workouts. They bring us the results later. We've got coaches, general managers and players come in. Not surprisingly, Mike Singletary was very impressive. Not surprising, of course, since he played at Baylor.

John, is Dunta's anger at being tagged keep him and the Texans from working on a long term contract till next offseason, or will they continue to talk? If they do keep negotiating, what are the chances of Dunta signing a long term deal before training camp opens?
11:08
John McClain -  Dunta is angry because he's getting $10 million for one year. He could have had $13 million more. He'll get over it. He's a team guy who works hard and is a leader. I don't see him sitting out like he says he might. As far as the long-term deal, I don't see any more negotiations until after the draft.

There are three first round picks on the defensive front that have failed to generate a consistent pass rush. Obviously, this indicates a lack of scouting expertise, coaching or both. Why would anyone believe that burning another first round pick on the defensive front will remedy the situation?

John McClain -  Who are the three first-round picks who have failed to generate a consistent pass rush? I see Travis Johnson and Amobi Okoye. I hope you're not talking about Mario Williams.

I am probably one of the few who believe Zac Diles has potential…huge potential. I think he is a headhunter. Is Johnny Holland mostly to blame for his lack of conditioning and development?
11:09
John McClain -  Huh? Are you kidding me? Diles was leading the team in tackles and playing his butt off. What are you talking about a lack of conditioning and development?

The coaching staff has done a particularly poor job of preparing the players to play from week to week. Specifically, what changes regarding game prep can we expect to see?
