1:01
Ty Burr -  Hello people -- Ty Burr here, or 77% of him.
1:01
Ty Burr -  Let's talk about movies and the things they touch upon. Send in your comments, queries, and rants and I'll finesse 'em as best I can.

[Comment From rubi-kun]
So, what's the deal with Armond White? He hates Pixar, Star Trek, Man on Wire, Milk, Slumdog, The Dark Knight, There Will Be Blood, Sweeney Todd, Pan's Labyrinth, Children of Men, etc. and actively bashes critics who praise those movies and loves crap like Transporter 3 and Dance Flick. It seems the only good films he likes are always either by Speilberg of the Coen brothers (which might suggest he was a happier person in the '80s when Speilberg was big and the Coens were starting out) or movies about dysfunctional families like Coraline, Rachel Getting Married, W, and Darjeeling Limited (which may suggest the reason why he's so unhappy)

Ty Burr -  Ah, Armond -- the cranky uncle of American film criticism.
1:03
Ty Burr -  I'm glad he's there, personally, even though I rarely agree with him. He has strong opinions and backs them up in articulate if aggressive writing.
1:04
Ty Burr -  I'm of the mind that you don't have to agree with a critic to be engaged by him or her, and Armond, by virtue of her perverseness, really does make you examine your unexamined assumptions.
1:04
Ty Burr -  HIS perverseness
1:05
Ty Burr -  At his worst, he comes off as a scold, though -- and no one enjoys being told they shouldn't enjoy something they liked.

Hi Ty - Recommendations on casting for "The Chastity Bono Story"?
1:06
Ty Burr -  Well, lessee... Hilary Swank has already been there and done that, more or less...
1:07
Ty Burr -  How about David Spade?
1:08
Ty Burr -  There's precedent -- 1970's "The Christine Jorgensen Story," in which the subject was played by actor John Hansen.

[Comment From Rich]
Where does Up rank in the Pixar pantheon?
1:09
Ty Burr -  Hi Rich -- "Up" is up there for me, just behind "WALL-E" and "The Incredibles" and maybe "Monsters Inc." Your mileage may vary. Weakest Pixar? For me, "Cars."

[Comment From bos]
Hi Ty, how are you? So ... what's your movie pick for this weekend?
1:10
Ty Burr -  Hey Bos -- depends on what you're in the mood for. If you haven't seen "Hangover" yet and what some raucous bad-boy comedy, it's really quite funny.
1:11
Ty Burr -  "Away We Go" is worthy for being about the kind of people we never see in movies -- intelligent, muddled 30-somethings -- but some of its views on other people tend to the smug.
1:11
Ty Burr -  "Taking of Pelham 123" isn't a bad remake of the 1974 original tho it turns into a wham-bam Tony Scott movie, which may or may not be a recommendation. (It's not for me.)

[Comment From aloha]
Hey Ty, what could have made "Pelham" better? (And, yep, I did read your review - thanks!)
1:12
Ty Burr -  A few things, Aloha -- trusting the New Yorkness of the material, for one. It's a bit of a tourist's-eye-view, nothing wrong with that but the original is special in ow it dug deep into the then-vibe of the city.
