Shadowfax on the KevinMD Live Q&A 7/14/09

4:52
kevinmd -  Welcome to the KevinMD Live Q&A.

Tonight's guest is emergency physician Shadowfax.

Blogging over at Movin’ Meat, Shadowfax is the pseudonym of an emergency physician in the Pacific Northwest. His blog posts are a combination of cogent health care reform analysis and opinion, commentary from the administrative side of medicine, and fascinating ER cases.

He recently had a piece on health care reform published in The New York Times’ Room for Debate blog, entitled, Shift Pay Away From Specialists.

Here’s your chance to ask him questions about life and practice in an American emergency room.

4:53
kevinmd -  You can begin posting your questions now for consideration.   The chat will begin at 10:30pm Eastern.
9:15
kevinmd -  1 hour, 15 minutes to go.   Keep the questions coming.
10:19
kevinmd -  Hello all, and welcome.
10:19
kevinmd -  We're waiting for Shadowfax, and when he arrives, we'll start.
10:20
kevinmd -  We'll answer some of the ER-related questions, and then discuss the House bill that was released today.
10:21
kevinmd -  If you want to ask a poll, just ask it with the #poll hashtag, and I'll set it up.
10:22
kevinmd -  While we're waiting, be sure to pick up the USA Today tomorrow, where I'll have my regular op-ed published.
10:22
ShadowFax -  I'm here, and I'd like to start by thanking Kevin for hosting this, and for inviting me.   I've not done one of these before, and I'm hoping it's going to be a lot of fun.
10:22
kevinmd -  Sounds good, just have fun, and let me know if I'm going too fast or too slow.
10:23
kevinmd -  You can break up your answers by using a ... at the end, so people aren't waiting too long.
10:23
ShadowFax -  No problem.   Please excuse any typos.   We can edite them out before this goes public, right?
10:23
kevinmd -  But let me know when you're done, by ending it with a period.   Yes, this will be edited, but not too thoroughly, as I'm pretty busy this week.
10:23
kevinmd -  Ok, here we go.
10:23
ShadowFax -  Joke.   I'm assuming this is live...
10:24
kevinmd -  It is, but I also edit the transcript.

[Comment From Kyle]
Doctors retiring today have seen a huge change in American medicine from the start of their careers to now, in treatment, science, financing of care, lifestyle, income, creation of EM as a speciality. What is your hope for where medicine will be when today's younger docs, like yourself, and today's medical students retire?
10:25
ShadowFax -  Great question.   My first hope is that the pendulum swings back a bit, towards the humanistic side of medicince...
10:25
ShadowFax -  Docs now -- be it ER, hospitalists, surgeons have to rush, especially in the office.   It takes away a lot of the personal rewards of dealing with patients.

[Comment From Guest]
How much defensive medicine is being practiced in the ER?
